We're delighted to announce that Australian Soil Management (ASM) is partnering with leading carbon farming service provider, Climate Friendly.

Joining forces with Climate Friendly means we can continue to support land managers as they strive to improve their natural capital and climate resilience while storing carbon in the landscape.

Climate Friendly’s use of the latest technology to map and monitor projects and its proven ability to successfully guide projects through to carbon credit issuance, means we can continue to provide excellent soil carbon advice backed an array of industry-leading services.

Our very own Dr Aurelie Quade received a mention in the Australian Strategic Materials (ASM) Dubbo Project Community Newsletter for the fantastic work she is doing alongside Fergus Job to monitor the Toongi Soil Carbon Project. We are proud to be working in this partnership and helping ASM achieve their sustainability goals!

We would like to extend a huge thank you to John Barton and James Maleganeas from CarbonRich for inviting us to participate in their first Field Day which was hosted at Mick Carey's farm near Coolamon, NSW on Tuesday. We would also like to wish them congratulations on the success of the day as it drew many farmers and agricultural professionals together for a time of education and discussion on soil carbon. We were treated to an excellent presentation and in-paddock discussion by John, as well as an interview with Mick on what he has achieved on his farm in terms of improved productivity, profitability and overall enjoyment in running his enterprises through building soil carbon! We would like to say a big thank you to Mick for opening his gates for the day and being willing to share his farming journey. We also had our very own Sophie Steel share the experience of a few of our Soil Carbon Project clients in improving farm productivity by rebuilding soil carbon. The day ended with a beautiful grass-fed lamb on the spit from Mick's farm and some cold beverages. All in all, it was a fantastic day and we think the cows agreed!

It's fantastic to see this great article published in the R.M.Williams OUTBACK magazine on some of our client's, Jack and Celia Tucker (Tucker's Dorper)! The Tucker's are such an inspiration in what they are achieving on their farm in terms of conservation and agricultural production. We are very honoured to be working with them on their Soil Carbon Project.

Project Starlight: Transforming Soils at Edenbridge

The Wentworth Brown family and their ASM Northern Regional Manager, Dr Aurelie Quade, are turning a paddock devastated by the 2017 bush fire into something remarkable—transforming hard, powdery soil into rich, productive land.
Humification is the process by which organic matter decomposes and transforms into humus, a stable form of organic matter that gives soil its dark colour and improves its structure, water retention and nutrient content.
Improved environmental conditions played a role, but so did high-impact grazing, deep-rooted plant species and non-synthetic fertilisers.
Sam and Chris are demonstrating the power of sustainable farming practices, how thoughtful land management can turn challenges into opportunities for growth and regeneration.

November 2023 (Photo 1): We could barely dig past 10 cm—the “topsoil” was only 1 cm deep, and below that, the subsoil was white and powdery.

January 2024 (Photo 2): Improvement! We managed to dig down 15 cm, and while topsoil is beginning to form, plant roots were still kinked.

July 2024 (Photo 3): Huge progress—Sam Wentworth Brown shows how the shovel now goes straight down, with no root kinks and vastly improved soil structure.

One our clients, Gill Sanbrook from Bibbaringa, is hosting a workshop with Soil Land Food on the 2nd of October. This is fantastic opportunity for producers in the area to learn how to make their own compost and biofertilisers. Register now so you don't miss out!

All in one day!!

Making Compost and Bioferts workshop on 2nd October. This is a hands on practical workshop. We will explore the basics of making compost and fermentation based biofertilisers on farm. This workshop will give you practical tips and recipes. The workshop will be held on farm Bibbaringa , Bowna, NSW .

Last week Sophie joined a large group of farmers and consultants for the annual Vic No Till conference in Wagga Wagga, NSW. There were a fantastic line-up of speakers on the first day, beginning with Joel Williams who eloquently synthesised recent literature findings on alternative cropping practices and inputs. Joel was followed by Keiran Knight, who shared her experience of utilising biological solutions as a farmer and agronomist, displaying some exciting results regarding crop health and yield. Stacey Curcio then provided a comprehensive and riveting education about the significance of soil health on human health. Rob Hetherington gave valuable insight on the importance of calcium for balancing soil chemistry and achieving stable soil structure. Dave Bushell shared his experience as an agronomist and the observations he has made regarding the direction of agriculture. He also provided an enlightening perspective on management through discussion of his transition from conventional to organic practices on his own farm. The following day enabled participants to get their hands dirty as everyone travelled to Michael Gooden's farm to watch various field demonstrations. Joel Williams swapped the stage for a soil pit and spent the day discussing soil profiles and management strategies for constraints commonly associated with heavy clay soils. David Hardwick, Simon Mattson and Rachel de Lastic from Soil Land Food demonstrated the HASH system (Holistic Assessment of Soil Health) which enables farmers to measure the chemical, physical and biological components of soil on their own farms. Michael Gooden then gave a demonstration of the Kiwi Tech electric fencing system which enables him to conduct cell grazing. The event was a fantastic learning and networking opportunity and ASM will certainly be participating again next year.

ASM's head soil scientist, Dr Greg Bender, was ecstatic to dig up this chicory plant during a yearly monitoring trip in April. The main tap-root had grown straight down 30 - 40 cm in a heavy clay soil that was heavily compacted prior to sowing. This was just one species sown as part of a diverse summer cover crop. There were significant differences in soil structure and insect activity in this paddock compared to the others which were dominated by a simple grass/clover mix. This demonstrates how improving the diversity of plant species and root systems can dramatically improve soil architecture, macro and microorganism activity, as well as water infiltration, storage and availability to plants. Show us your mixed species pastures in the comments!
