For 20 years contentgroup has been delivering quality content communication to the government and public sector, strengthening connections with citizens and their communities through effective communication. As technology has changed how citizens and government interact we’ve made sure to keep up. Our role is to help br

idge the gap between the two and create stronger communication in the digital age. Currently, in partnership with the Australian National University, contentgroup is developing an evidence-based methodology to create efficient, effective communications. The resulting framework creates a straight forward method for initiating, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive communication strategy in a government context. When lies travel faster than the truth, trust becomes harder to protect and easier to lose.

In this clip from the GovComms Institute Podcast, Sree Srinivasan, discusses how misinformation spreads quickly through social media, and why AI can accelerate the problem when the same power structures and incentives carry across.

For government communicators, the point isn’t to panic about new tools. It’s to recognise the conditions that let false information move at speed: high emotion, low friction sharing, and platforms optimised for engagement rather than accuracy.

The practical response is to plan for velocity. Have clear processes for verifying information, updating messages quickly, and explaining what you know, what you don’t know yet, and what people should do next. Consistency and clarity matter, especially when audiences are overloaded and uncertain.

In a crisis, people don’t just want information. They want information they can trust, delivered consistently, in a way that lets them be part of the conversation.

In this clip from the GovComms Institute Podcast, Sree Srinivasan, AI educator and communications practitioner, reflects on what he saw firsthand during the pandemic: how social platforms can both connect communities and “poison” people’s minds, and why showing up every day with credible content mattered.

A few practical reminders land strongly here. Consistency builds confidence, especially when the environment is volatile and misinformation moves fast. And the channel matters less than the approach: clear storytelling, at the right time for your audiences, with a genuine two-way loop so people can ask questions, respond and feel heard.

For government and public sector communicators, this is a useful test to apply now: are we creating broadcasts, or conversations? If you’re planning for the next emergency update, policy change or community concern, design for participation, not just distribution, and make it easy to stay with you over time.

It’s hard to get people interested in a statistic, so how do you meet them where they are?

In the latest episode, Heather Lansdowne, Social Media Manager at the Australian Bureau of Statistics, explains how linking data to culture helps it cut through, and why in-house creation matters.

It’s a practical reminder for public sector communicators that agility often comes from building capability in your team, not waiting for perfect conditions.

Today we acknowledge and remember the unjust mistreatment faced by Indigenous Australians, particularly the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and their communities.

We encourage everyone to reflect on how you can contribute to the healing process of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, as well as our nation as a whole.

Reconciliation is an active process that requires all of us to take part.

Sometimes AI is not the problem.
It's the lack of thorough review and fact-checking.

For this month's blog, Soph McKercher takes us through the issues associated with AI capability. Often AI is not the issue. It's lack of discipline.

For everyone working in the APS, this is a particularly timely reminder of how we can use AI safely and reliably.

What does an ideal Mother’s Day really look like?

This year, we asked the mums at contentgroup — and the answers were refreshingly simple.
No big plans. No pressure.
Just time together, fewer decisions, less cleaning… and all the kids in one place.
A small reminder that sometimes the best moments aren’t elaborate — they’re human, honest and shared.

Happy Mother’s Day 💐

Misinformation isn’t a side issue anymore. It’s part of the day-to-day operating environment for government communications.

In this clip from the GovComms Institute Podcast, Brenda Duran, Los Angeles County Justice Care and Opportunities Department (JCOD), reflects on what COVID-19 revealed about misinformation on social platforms, and why public sector teams now need to act more like their own news machine.

The shift to digital channels helped government get critical information out fast, but it also accelerated the spread of rumours and false narratives. Brenda’s point is practical: social media can’t just be a broadcast channel in a crisis. It also has to be a place where you actively correct the record as an authority.

With traditional media gatekeeping weakened and newsrooms shrinking, relying on others to tell your story is less realistic than it used to be. For government communicators, that means building capability to publish directly through video, social content and clear storytelling that helps communities find accurate information quickly.
