It's Anti Poverty Week this week from 11-17 October.

Poverty in Australia is estimated at 1 in 7 (3.7 million) people and 1 in 6 (757,000) children. This is based on a poverty line of 50% of median household after-tax income of $584 a week for a single adult or $1,226 a week for a couple with two children.

This Anti Poverty Week, we're joining the call to the Australian Government to establish standard measures of poverty and clear targets to reduce it.

This time last week FRSA delegates were at Parliament House for a Parliamentary Briefing Day as part of our annual Strategic Leadership Forum.

The day provides an opportunity to meet with Senators, Members of Parliament and advisors – as part of the FRSA network, to discuss current policy priorities for the sector.

This year in total, members met with 55 of our nation’s leaders.

Throwback to SLF last week.

A big thank you to Susan Helyar for highlighting the importance of building a stronger understanding of, and greater visibility around, the cost of delivering social services.

With the new Children and Family Support Program, the sector has a unique opportunity to take a closer look at the programs and services being delivered. The recommissioning process also provides service providers with a valuable opportunity to assess whether available funding will adequately support service delivery and outcomes.

Last week’s Strategic Leadership Forum was a valuable opportunity for sector leaders to come together, share perspectives and reflect on the future of children, families and communities.

A big thank you to Chris Collet from the Attorney-General’s Department, and Micheal Lye and Jacqueline Hrast from the Department of Social Services, for speaking with delegates and sharing insights into how the sector is informing their thinking.

It was a great conversation and an important opportunity to strengthen connections across the sector and consider the work ahead.

Call for abstracts for the 2027 Child Inclusive Practice Forum are now OPEN!

Next year’s CIP Forum theme is Children and Young People in Their Own Right. Child Inclusive Practice is the foundation for working with families to ensure that children’s views and opinions are actively heard and considered in decision making and therapeutic forums. The 2027 forum will explore the principles and practice of working with children and young people in ways that genuinely recognise them as active participants, in their own right.

FRSA invites abstracts for presentations from all professional domains that promote the genuine participation of children and young people and ensure their experiences and views are central in practice. The content will have a focus on research and practice presentations that incorporate the views and experiences of children and young people. How can we engage ethically and meaningfully with children and young people in their own right?
