THE ASK

I'm asking three things:

1. BUILDERS: Update your spec. One solar vent. One pe*******on.
Documented compliance. Reduced liability. Same cost.

2. CERTIFIERS: Ask for the data. Rated airflow at 0 km/h. Thermostat
spec. Warranty. If the builder can't provide it, don't sign off.

3. HOMEOWNERS: Demand proof. "Show me the performance data" is the
most powerful question you can ask.

The NCC is supposed to protect the people who live in buildings.
Right now, it's protecting the industry that builds them.

Let's fix that.

• Certifier guidance document
• Builder specification clause
• Homeowner assessment checklist
• ABCB change proposal

THE MYTH BUSTING

MYTH: "Whirlybirds have worked for decades."
FACT: They've been decorative for decades. Nobody tested them.

MYTH: "Solar vents are just a sales gimmick."
FACT: They have motors, thermostats, and certified performance data.
Whirlybirds have... spinners.

MYTH: "Certifiers accept them, so they must be fine."
FACT: Certifiers accept what they can see. They don't see still days.
They don't see seized bearings. They don't see mould in year three.

MYTH: "They're cheaper."
FACT: One callback for condensation damage costs more than the
difference between 3 whirlybirds and 1 solar vent. Do the math.

MYTH: "The NCC doesn't ban them."
FACT: The NCC requires PERFORMANCE. If you can't prove performance,
you're not compliant — regardless of whether the product is named.

THE SOLUTION

We have spent 6 months advocating for one simple change to NCC 10.8.3:

Require roof ventilation to demonstrate rated airflow at 0 km/h wind.

That's it. One line. No product ban. No industry disruption. Just
proof that the device actually works.

We have submitted a formal proposal to the ABCB. We have written to every
state Building Minister. We have spoken to certifiers, builders, and
homeowners.

Now we need your voice.

If you're a certifier who wants clear standards: share this.
If you're a builder who wants reduced liability: share this.
If you're a homeowner who got mould: share this.

The NCC review is ongoing. The Building Ministers' Meeting is coming
up. This is the moment.

THE HOMEOWNER ANGLE

Your builder said the whirlybirds were "code compliant."

Two years later, your roof space is covered in mould. Your top floor
is unbearable in summer. Your heating bill is through the roof.

You Google "whirlybird performance data." Nothing.

You ask your builder for proof the ventilation works. They show you
a photo of four spinning metal mushrooms.

That's not proof. That's a decoration.

If you're building or renovating, demand this: "Show me the rated
airflow at zero wind speed. Show me the thermostat specification.
Show me the warranty."

If they can't, you're buying a wind toy. Not a ventilation system.

THE BUILDER ANGLE

To volume builders: let's talk real numbers.

Whirlybird spec:
• 3 units per dwelling
• 3 roof pe*******ons
• 3 potential leak points
• Bearings seize in 3–5 years
• Zero performance data

Solar Roof Vent spec:
• 1 unit per dwelling
• 1 roof pe*******on
• 1 potential leak point
• 10-year warranty
• Certified airflow data

Same installed cost. Fewer callbacks. Documented compliance.
Reduced liability.

The only reason to keep fitting whirlybirds is habit. And habit is
expensive.

THE CERTIFIER ANGLE

To our building surveyor and certifier colleagues:

You know the NCC is performance-based. You know Section 10.8.3
requires condensation management. You know whirlybirds have no
performance data.

But you sign off because "everyone does it" and "the builder will
push back."

Here's the thing: the builder's pushback is not your liability. The
homeowner's mould remediation claim is.

We've put together a certifier guidance document that gives you the
language, the checklist, and the defence to require verified
performance. Message us for a copy.

Let's raise the standard together.

THE LIABILITY

Post-Mascot. Post-Opal. Post-Grenfell.

"Industry standard" is no longer a legal defence.

If a homeowner gets mould in year three and their lawyer asks you to
prove the roof ventilation worked, what do you show them?

With a whirlybird: nothing. No test data. No rated airflow. No
performance verification.

With a solar vent: a product data sheet showing 2,700+ m³/hr at 0 km/h
wind. A thermostat specification. Documented compliance.

The question isn't whether you can get away with whirlybirds today.
The question is whether you can defend them tomorrow.

THE PHYSICS

Let's talk about Bernoulli's principle and why your whirlybird fails
physics 101.

A whirlybird requires wind to create a pressure differential. No wind
= no pressure differential = no airflow.

On a 35°C still day, your roof space hits 60°C. Your whirlybird is
stationary. Your air conditioner is working overtime. Your power bill
is climbing.

A solar vent uses a motor. A motor creates airflow regardless of
external wind. It also has a thermostat, so it only runs when needed.

This isn't product preference. This is thermodynamics.

One is a wind toy. The other is engineering.

THE PROBLEM

Every year, tens of thousands of Australian homes are fitted with
whirlybirds and signed off as "NCC compliant."

Here's the problem: whirlybirds don't spin on still days. And still
days are when condensation forms.

NCC 10.8.3 requires condensation MANAGEMENT. Not ventilation presence.
Not a spinning hat on your roof. Management.

A device that is inactive when the problem occurs cannot be considered
compliant — regardless of how long the industry has accepted it.

Builders: what's your callback rate for condensation and mould?
Certifiers: can you produce the performance data that justifies your
sign-off?

🚫 Stop relying on passive roof vents that only work when the wind is blowing.

Join Shane from Sunline Solar as he demonstrates why Solar Roof Ventilation is the smarter, more effective solution for keeping your roof space cooler all year round.

Unlike traditional passive vents, Solar Roof Ventilators actively extract hot air using solar power, delivering consistent airflow even on still, scorching summer days—when you need it most. By removing trapped heat from your roof cavity, they help reduce heat transfer into your home, improve comfort, and reduce the workload on your air conditioning.

But the benefits don't stop in summer.

During winter, your roof space can trap moisture and condensation, creating the perfect environment for mould, mildew, and timber deterioration. Active Solar Roof Ventilation helps remove this trapped moisture, keeping your roof cavity dry, protecting your home, and improving the overall health of your roof space all year round.

Watch Shane explain the difference and see why more Australian homeowners are making the switch to active solar ventilation.

☀️ 100% solar powered
🌡️ Actively removes trapped heat and moisture
💨 Works when passive vents can't
🏡 Helps improve comfort and energy efficiency

Don't settle for outdated passive vents when you can have a ventilation system that actively works to protect your home.
