Independent modelling shows this Budget’s tax hikes will reduce new housing supply.

Renters and home buyers will end up competing for less homes.

The Budget legislation must be amended to turbocharge supply and remove barriers to building. Right now, those barriers are rising, not falling.

GDP growth in Australia slowed to 0.3 per cent in the first quarter of 2026. This will continue to be compounded by global instability and the Federal Government’s higher taxes on housing.

If we want to turbocharge the economy, we need to get construction right. It makes up 11 per cent of GDP and has a strong multiplier effect across the economy.

At the same time, current policy debates including calls to prioritise support for tech startups over builders and tradies highlight just how disconnected some decision-makers are from the reality of running a small business in Australia today.

Today’s new data from the ABS confirms new home building was already on the back foot ahead of the May Federal Budget, with approvals falling in both March and April.

In a housing crisis, the priority is to increase supply. Master Builders is urging the Parliament to ensure that the final Budget legislation will increase and not decrease our housing supply.

Our CEO Denita Wawn joins with other building and construction bodies to discuss the Federal Budget’s impact on the construction industry.

Modelling shows rising rents and a growing housing shortfall. What we were hoping from this budget was support to remove supply barriers and increase the supply of new homes.

Instead, the result will be a shrinking housing pool, with home buyers and renters competing for fewer homes.

31/05/2026

As reported on Sky News, the Government says housing is a supply problem and they’re right.

But tax hikes don’t fix it. They just shift demand around.

If we actually want affordability, we need to build more homes.

30/05/2026

The Parliament must act and amend the legislation to turbocharge new housing supply, not send it backwards.

Australia is already falling short of its Housing Accord target by more than 200,000 homes.

New modelling reveals the hit to housing supply and renters will be far worst than estimated in the federal budget.
