Canberra Times Weekly Wrap 📸

Another busy week behind the lens for The Canberra Times, covering a mix of community stories, breaking news and sport across the region.

The week began at the Handmade Markets and the Salvation Army’s annual Blanket Drive before heading to the launch of Floriade 2026. I also photographed a Canberra mother raising concerns about the safety of parents’ rooms in shopping centres, and a Queanbeyan resident who discovered a suspected peeping drone perched on a windowsill outside her home.

There were some powerful personal stories this week, including a father who lost his son to a drug driver four years ago and says he has lost faith in the Canberra justice system, and a profile on a local woman awarded an OAM for her services to sport.

On the business front, I met entrepreneur Jason Roses, whose new Zing Fresh oral care products are now being stocked nationally and are preparing to launch in New Zealand and Dubai.

Sport rounded out the week, with a chilly night covering the Raiders’ clash against the Roosters before finishing on the sidelines of the Under-14 and Under-16 League Tag Carnival, capturing the next generation of talent in action.

Looking forward to seeing what next week brings.

Back on the sidelines covering the Canberra Raiders last night, and Canberra certainly turned on the winter weather. It was a freezing night at the footy, with numb fingers and a camera that felt heavier with every minute.

Unfortunately for the Green Machine, the Sydney Roosters were simply too good, playing an expansive and creative brand of football that kept the Raiders on the back foot for much of the game.

It had been a while since I’d photographed a Raiders match, so there was definitely a bit of rust to shake off, but it’s always great to be back capturing the action, emotion and atmosphere of rugby league under the lights.

Canberra Times Weekly Wrap 📸

This week started at ANU with Uni House prepares to finally reopen after five years of renovations, before heading to Via Dolce for a sweet assignment on Canberra’s late-night dessert scene.

From there it was into Senate Estimates and Question Time at the ACT Legislative Assembly, visits to Big Steps Little Feet as more schools come on board, and pastries at L’orange Patisserie that definitely didn’t make it back to the office untouched.

One of the more emotional stories this week followed a Canberra team supporting underprivileged children in Timor-Leste, after the country’s highest honour awarded to them was stolen — with the group now fighting to recover the medal or even secure a replica.

Also photographed a volunteer marking 30 years supporting people in palliative care and living with MND, a press conference with Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry on education and early childhood, and member of the Police Ambulance and Clinician Early Response (PACER) team for our upcoming unsung heroes feature.

Finished the week with plenty of coffees, card uploads and kilometres on the clock

Another busy week out on the road for The Canberra Times

This week’s jobs took me from Tharwa to the sporting fields, covering the loss of the Tharwa General Store’s Australia Post LPO, a 10-year-old student speaking out with a petition to stop a proposed building near her school, and a local resident sharing concerns about Canberra’s rising crime rate.

Also photographed the owner of Canberra startup Psithur, who has developed a platform to better understand the tender marketplace, and Canberra-based startup Tapeamate, which is hoping to raise capital for an app designed to help people taper off medication.

Finished the week on the sidelines with some junior hockey and first grade men’s AFL — Eastlake taking on Batemans Bay.

Behind the scenes, there was plenty more too — multiple kindergarten classes for Big Steps Little Feet, three video projects for David Pope’s Century Collection image sale, and two vox pop days chatting with Gungahlin and Tuggeranong locals about crime in their communities.

A mix of news, sport, business and community stories this week — exactly how I like it.

Canberra Times Weekly Wrap 📸

This week started with a pre-budget government announcement on upgrading the rail line between Canberra and Sydney before heading into the federal budget lockup for a long day buried in papers, policy and coffee.

Spent time with a Canberra car theft victim now fighting eight traffic tickets, 25 demerit points and a suspended licence after alleged thieves racked up offences in his stolen car. Covered another theft story involving a young chef whose car, expensive knife set, passports and partner’s car keys were stolen before police chased the vehicle across Canberra and deployed tyre deflators. The alleged offenders fled on foot and still haven’t been caught.

Photographed architects who restored a classic ex-guvvie home without stripping away the character that made it special, and covered the RSPCA receiving $30 million in the federal budget.

Also photographed the autumn colours inside the usually private courtyards at Australian Parliament House as the public is invited behind the scenes for a rare look through the grounds

Food assignment this week was a visit to Otis Dining Hall, while another story took me to the Old Canberra Inn where a musician blasted an amp beside a decibel meter to highlight Canberra’s low noise limits — complete with traffic noise recordings from the road outside.

Rounded the week out with an inspiring interview with an Invictus Australia member sharing what the Invictus Games meant to him and why ongoing funding matters so much.

One of those weeks where every assignment was completely different from the last — exactly why I love this job.

This week had a bit of everything — from the future of Fairbairn Golf Course after the Department of Defence announced plans to sell the site, to parents speaking out about incidents in shopping centre parents rooms. I photographed Treasurer Jim Chalmers with his budget tree portrait, covered a budget case study on rising diesel prices, and met a young couple trying to save for their first home in Canberra.

There was plenty of food this week too — shooting at a new North Vietnamese restaurant and finishing off a review at The Ottoman in Barton 🍜

Also covered a tragic fatal car crash, photographed a fascinating talk about Lake Burley Griffin before it was even a lake, Shane Rattenbury’s valedictory speech, and the Canberra Brave gearing up for the upcoming ice hockey season 🏒

Wrapped up the week with Easts women’s rugby team pushing for better facilities and local footy between the Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen Warriors.

Always grateful for the people who share their stories each week.

A quieter week on the road, but still a mix of stories across the capital.

Started off covering a car stolen out of Dickson that ended up all the way in Tamworth, brought to a stop after police deployed road spikes. One of those jobs that takes a turn pretty quickly.

Spent time with a local mum who’s launched AccessLife, an app designed to help families navigate and find disability providers—one of those genuinely useful ideas born out of lived experience.

Covered an ACT Health press conference around this year’s flu vaccine rollout, as we head into the colder months.

Out in Belconnen, photographed an apartment complex facing ongoing repair issues.

Another car theft this week too—this one a bit different, with the owner tracking it down using a GPS key. A reminder of how common these jobs are becoming.

Also at the Legislative Assembly, a press conference involving a Greens MP and the possibility of a return—one to keep an eye on politically.

Dropped in with an ANU professor at their 1950s home, full of character and history—always nice to slow things down and shoot something with a bit of texture.

Finished the week with a powerful story from a car crash survivor, sharing their experience and urging people to donate blood—one that sticks with you.

Quiet, but still plenty happening.

Back from a week on leave and straight into a big one behind the lens

Kicked things off with the Canberra Raiders launching their ANZAC Round jersey, inspired by the Navy — a powerful tribute. From there, I met a woman navigating the challenges of downsizing from a house to apartment living, only to find herself at odds with management.

Also on the job this week: newly blessed classrooms, capturing a moving ANZAC Day portrait, and covering the early morning stillness of the Dawn Service. Wrapped it all up with the energy and tradition of Two-Up celebrations.

Good to be back out there telling stories again.

A special one to see on today’s front page of The Canberra Times 📸

I had the privilege of photographing Flying Officer Kbora Ali ahead of delivering the ANZAC Day Dawn Service Address — a powerful and historic moment as the first person of Afghan descent to do so.

Moments like this are a reminder of the evolving story of service, identity and what ANZAC Day represents in modern Australia. Honoured to help capture it.

Started things off with a food review at Giannis Italian Restaurant — never a bad way to kick off the week. From there, it was into the classroom with the Radford College principal talking through the 2025 ATAR results.

Midweek took a turn exploring the eerie remains of Big Splash Waterpark, documenting the damage left behind, before shifting gears to a homeowner feeling the pressure of rising building costs.

There was plenty happening across the capital — covering the launch of a new political party, a look inside a Canberra-based drone manufacturer, and even helping spread the word about a missing Great Dane.

Community stories were front and centre, with a cycling group riding to raise funds for child cancer research, and a behind-the-scenes tour of the new galleries at the Australian War Memorial.

Cultural celebrations lit up the week too, capturing Greek Orthodox Easter traditions across Canberra.

Wrapped it all up with a massive weekend of sport — the Canberra Times Marathon Festival, plus women’s rugby league and women’s rugby union bringing the energy.

That’s a wrap
