On 2 June 2026, the Fair Work Commission announced the Annual Wage Review 2026 decision. The expert panel has determined all modern award minimum wage rates will be increased by 4.75% from 1 July 2025.

From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage will be increased to $1004.90 per week (based on a 38 hour week) or $26.44 per hour.

Employers must pay the increased pay amounts from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 July 2026.

Legal professional privilege (LPP) protects confidential information, documents and communications, between a lawyer and a client made for the purpose of providing legal advice or services.

Issues surrounding LPP arise when documents address a wider-range of topics beyond just providing legal advice or services. This is the core issue in the recent case of Medibank Private Limited v McClure [2026] FCAFC 38.

Privacy Awareness Week (PAW) is a timely reminder that trust matters more than ever in the age of AI. This year, the Office of the Victorian Information Commissioner (OVIC) are recognising this with their PAW theme: ‘Smart tech, smarter choices: protecting your privacy in the age of AI.’

As AI becomes part of everyday life, we all have a role to play. We need to ask questions, understand how our data is used and expecting accountability from organisations that build and deploy these technologies.

Privacy should be a priority, not an afterthought. OVIC have a number of webinars running this week for anyone interested in learning more about their role in this new age of AI.

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has issued a landmark determination against a major rental technology (RentTech) platform, sending a clear message that is it is not acceptable to collect as much information as possible without a clear reason for doing so.

OAIC found that the “2Apply” platform, a popular tool used by property managers to collect information about rental applicants, collected excessive personal information and did so by unfairmeans. This decision has reiterated that organisations must have a clear use for the personal information they collect and clarified what constitutes the collection of personal information by ‘unfair means’.

Griffin Legal is proud to once again be taking part in Privacy Awareness Week (PAW).

This year’s theme is – Trust is built here. In every privacy complaint. In every resolution.

PAW is a campaign that Griffin Legal has supported for many years, championed by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) to raise awareness of privacy issues and highlight the importance of protecting personal information.

This year’s theme pulls focus towards strengthening privacy dispute resolution practices and building public confidence in how personal information is handled.

Being prepared is the best line of defence, and trust is built in the response. As part of Privacy Awareness Week GL have teamed up with the International Association of Privacy Professionals and the ACT Law Society for a practical panel exploring privacy and AI risk management tools and the opportunity to work through best (and worst) case data breach response scenarios.

Aligned to this year’s theme: “Trust is built here – in every privacy complaint, in every resolution,” the session will focus on how timely decisions, clear stakeholder communication and strong follow through can either protect (or seriously damage) trust when it matters most. Attendees will leave with practical tools to respond quickly and confidently to data breaches and AI related privacy risks and to build trust through response and resolution.

We have a great lineup of speakers this year:

• Damie Brazel, Griffin Legal (Facilitator)
• Murray Woodford, AUSTRAC
• Melinda Smith, Airservices Australia
• Joanne Hogno, The Lottery Corporation

When: Thursday, 7 May 2026 from 5:00pm
Where: ACT Law Society, Level 1, 5 Constitution Avenue, Canberra

Light refreshments and networking will follow the panel discussion.
