Horse brasses go back to Pre-Roman times when they were displayed on working horses. The shiny brass was seen to be reflective against evil and the horse would be protected. Crescent moons, suns and hearts were popular symbols. Later in the 19th century horse brass production became more mass produced and the horse brasses were stamped out rather than cast and often were much thinner.
As motor transport overtook horse and cart, horse brasses entered a new arena of collecting. Pubs in particular adopted horse brasses as a decorative icon to past trades.
Horse brasses come in many designs, Royal, animals, regiment crests, rural and farm life.
