I was chatting to one of my clients and talking about how suffocating it can be to be at home, to feel like your life has been cut off at the knees.

How you can't go back to a traditional job because you need to be no more than 10 minutes away.

How you can't talk about the real things that happen in your home because it's just too hard to admit.

How all-consuming it can be.

And on the flip side, how you rejoice over milestones met that everyone else takes for granted.

How pure the joy is, often over strange things (like the THX logo sound)

It can be hard and amazing at the same time.

You can want to run away and hide but worry about your kids when they are with someone else.

How much duality there can be.

Please know, that I see you.

I know that this is hard. I know because I live it too.

And it's only together that we pull each other through.

What do you wish schools knew about supporting your kids?

We have come from a setting where children are raised in a village. More and more we know that's no longer the case. An...

We have come from a setting where children are raised in a village.

More and more we know that's no longer the case. And we know that that village is even less for people with kids with additional needs.

So many of my clients talk to me about feeling isolated, alone, and no one even taking the time to get to know them and their amazing kiddos, because all they see is the big behaviour and tap out.

And I get it. It can be super confronting to watch a child who is really struggling with their emotions.

So, this is my challenge to everyone out there - not just those who are already in the fray of additional needs parenting - ask that Mumma how you can help.

Some suggestions might be:
Can you grab a cuppa with them, and if it's at their house because that's where their kid is the most comfortable, do that with no judgment on what their home looks like
Ask how long is good for a visit. 30 minutes might be a good time.
Offer to pick up their person's favourite sack (paying attention to the brand details, because yes... it matters)
Send them a text and let them know that you are thinking of them
Invite them with no issue if they say no, or they come and leave early. Don't assume that they won't want to come. Let them make that choice.
Ask them how you can help accommodate their children. Perhaps it's being able to turn up early to a party, or having a quiet space for them, or their favourite foods out.

Sometimes it's the smallest things that are the things that help people feel loved.

She was NOT ready!

I get it.... schools are starting to return to life...

Our nervous systems are not ready for these calls.

So many of us are still recovering from last year!!

Go gently people.

On the twenty-ninth day of December Kelly said to me...

The heat can be unrelenting over Christmas.

Use washcloths, ice, water play, cool singlets, boxer shorts (for boys and girls), tepid baths, sprinklers, the hose, air conditioning, the pool, trampoline with the hose (always a hit at our home)

There's probably heaps more tips. If you have any good ways for dealing with the heat, let me know!
