We have just published an article on the Workpac decision involving casual employees and paid leave entitlements. If you have been losing sleep over this issue, this may give you a reason to relax.

The news has been very full lately of a new threat to business that is not related to COVID-19. Until there is legislative change that makes it worthwhile for employers to engage in Enterprise Bargaining once more, we will continue to see low wage growth and stagnant retail markets.

Negotiating Agreements in the current statutory framework is a pointless exercise for employers which leads them down a path of arguing with employees every few years about the quantum of wage rises without being able to discuss workplace flexibility. Without workplace flexibility there is no ability to guarantee wage increases, hence the current stagnant economy.

Cutting interest rates is not the only way to improve the economy, and we should stop looking at the Reserve Bank as the key holder to the door of economic recovery.

Much worse than expected retail sales figures are pointing towards the need for further monetary and fiscal stimulus to support struggling households.
