A sneak peak into our “Befriending Stress” session with a large corporate group tomorrow. Polyvagal Theory provides a great insight into our stress response. The more awareness we can bring to the impact of stress on our nervous system, the more choice we have in how we manage it. A certain amount of stress is healthy and productive, but we are not designed to stay in a highly stressed state for a prolonged period. When we do, our brain can start to disassociate or shut down (lockdown fatigue, anyone?). Thankfully, there are some simple and effective techniques to ensure our relationship with stress is healthy and productive!

You know those rare people with whom you feel inexplicably calm? The ones who just seem at ease and put you at ease too?

They’re present.

And when we are present - connected to Self, we elicit this connection in others.

A major part of our job as Gestalt therapists is to remain present, to both ourselves and with our clients. This doesn’t just mean paying attention and listening well, it means remaining connected our Self - the part of us that is open and curious about ourselves and our clients in each moment.

It’s a skill that can take years of personal therapy and professional practice to master, and it is invaluable in therapy because the more present and connected to Self we are, the more easily our clients can access this space within themselves, and it’s from here that the healing takes place.

Presence is also a beautiful gift to give to those we care about. It provides the space in which connection can deepen and each person can feel truly seen and heard by another.

So presence isn’t just something we practice in meditation, it’s functional, relational and necessary for healing. This is why a modality with a focus on presence, like Gestalt is so powerfully healing.

Sometimes it seems as though our strong feelings might overwhelm us. In these moments the most helpful thing we can do is stay curious about what we are experiencing. When we are able to be curious, we are in a place of non-judgement and we can experience some separation from the strong emotion. We can then observe what is happening, rather than the emotion being our whole experience. In this way, our strong emotions don’t need to overwhelm us and they can be an opportunity to develop greater self-awareness.

We are social creatures, and we love in relationship with others, then ourselves.

Throwback to Golden Boy’s very first shift as a therapy dog in Laura’s psychotherapy practice. While he did little more than say hi and sleep on the floor, he was already helping clients feel safe and grounded, and he has been doing this important work ever since!
