The Melbourne Microfinance Initiative (MMI) is a student-run organisation at the University of Melbourne which provides pro-bono consulting services predominantly to microfinance institutions, and empowers students to make a difference. Founded in 2010, MMI is the first and largest microfinance (oriented) organisation established at an Australian university, and has now expanded to include project

Social Impact: to have a direct impact on communities in the Asia-Pacific and the world
Student Engagement: to empower students with practical knowledge and skills
Inspire: to inspire people to take action against poverty and social inequality

With a portfolio of active consulting projects throughout the Asia-Pacific and regular social impact focussed student events, MMI is growing and empowering more communities and more students each year. 🇱🇦 MMI Project Trip to Laos 🇱🇦

During mid-year, a team from MMI had the opportunity to travel to Laos to work alongside the Lao Micro Finance Association (LMFA) on our project.

Between meeting with LMFA, visiting the National University of Laos and chatting with a professor, the team got to experience a little bit of life in Laos along the way.

Late-night financial modelling sessions, local street food, exploring the city, and plenty of laughs in between made this trip one to remember.

A huge thank you to LMFA and everyone who welcomed our team along the way. ❤️

🇨🇳 MMI Project Trip to China 🇨🇳

During mid-year, a team from MMI had the opportunity to travel to China to work alongside Green Camel Bell (GCB) on a project.

From interviewing herders in rural Maqu and travelling between communities on horseback, to presenting at the Chongqing International Green Energy Sustainable Development Conference, it was a week full of new experiences, long days and plenty of memories.

And of course, we can’t forget the beef noodles, hotpot, three-coffee conference days, lantern-lit nights and becoming very good friends with the herders’ kids 🫶

Huge thank you to GCB for having us and to everyone who made this trip so special. ❤️
