One of the fastest ways to stall profit is not knowing which work actually makes you money.

Everything gets treated the same.
You say yes.
You stay busy.
And somehow the numbers don’t improve.

What I notice is that a lot of pressure comes from mixing good work with work that drains margin.

The week fills up, but profit doesn’t.

Once people separate the two, decisions get easier.
Pricing gets firmer.
Some work quietly drops away.

This isn’t about doing less. It’s about doing the right work more often.

A big part of doubling profit isn’t more leads or longer days. It’s knowing which work deserves your time and which doesn’t. Clarity here changes how the whole business runs.

Question: Which jobs feel busy but never seem to move the bank balance?

You probably know roughly what the business owes.

There’s the vehicle finance, equipment, credit card, maybe something sitting with the ATO, and a few other repayments coming out each month.

Individually, you know they’re there.

But when was the last time you put all of them in one place and looked at the full picture?

This is something I encourage clients to do because debt itself isn’t always the problem. Not knowing exactly what you owe, what it’s costing you and what you want to tackle first makes it much harder to make good financial decisions.

Clarity on debt is a leadership decision.

One clear list gives you a much better starting point for deciding what happens next.

I created my free Debt Minimising Checklist to help you sit down and work through this properly, rather than keeping the numbers scattered across statements, accounts and your head.

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Start by getting clear on where you are, then decide what makes sense for the business.

If Your Year to Double is the direction you’re heading, knowing what’s happening with the money you already have matters just as much as bringing more in.

You can download the checklist via the link in the comments.

How clear are you on the total debt sitting in your business right now?

Some weeks in business are just hard.

A team member resigns. A client says no. Cash flow gets tighter than you'd like. Something you were sure would work… doesn't.

And yes, there are days when even the most experienced business owners wonder whether they're actually cut out for this.

Those moments aren't a sign that you're failing. They're part of building a business.

The owners I've watched create extraordinary businesses aren't the ones who get every decision right. They're the ones who can look at what happened, learn from it, make the next decision and keep moving.

Sometimes business growth isn't a big breakthrough.

Sometimes it's giving yourself a little grace today, getting back up tomorrow and continuing to build.

You don't need to have it all figured out.

You just need to keep going. ❤️

When Fiona reached out, her business was at a crossroads. They were facing a taxing time, and clarity felt out of reach. She needed a solid plan to navigate the challenges ahead.

We worked together to define a vision for the future and break it down into actionable steps. What stood out most about Fiona was her commitment to the process, not only did she embrace the plan we created, but she also brought her team on board, ensuring alignment and shared purpose.

Through collaboration, we turned what felt overwhelming into a clear path forward. Fiona’s leadership and willingness to adapt made all the difference. Today, her business is thriving, and the challenges that once felt insurmountable have become stepping stones to growth.

If you’re navigating uncertainty in your business, Fiona’s story shows that a clear plan and the right support can make all the difference. Let’s work together to create clarity and confidence in your next steps.

Waiting to feel completely sure before making a money decision seems like the responsible move. Most of the time it's actually the expensive one.

A price rise sits on the to-do list for months, waiting for a spare weekend that never quite arrives, while every job at the old rate keeps quietly costing more than it should. The instinct to wait for the full picture is a fair one. That full picture rarely turns up all at once, and the business just keeps running on the old numbers in the meantime.

A few small habits help push through this:

Pick the one money decision that's been sitting there longest
Use the numbers already on hand to make a rough call this week
Set a date to review it properly once more information comes in

A rough decision made now usually earns its keep faster than a perfect one that keeps getting pushed to next quarter.

What's one money decision you've been putting off until you felt more certain?

Most business owners I work with don’t fail because of a lack of skill, they struggle because of what’s going on in their head.

Mindset can make or break your business. The difference between “this is too hard, I give up” and “I’ll persevere and keep trying” can be the difference between a business that stagnates and one that grows.

Every tradie or service-based owner I know has made mistakes, doubted themselves, or hit the wall. I’ve done it too. What separates the ones who push through is not intelligence or luck, it’s how they choose to think.

A growth mindset doesn’t mean pretending everything is easy. It means recognising when things are tough and asking: what can I learn from this?

Instead of:
❌ “I made a mistake” → ✅ “Mistakes help me grow”
❌ “This isn’t working” → ✅ “I’ll try a different way”
❌ “I’m not good enough” → ✅ “I’ll put in my best effort”

Business is full of setbacks. But each setback can either reinforce the story that you’re stuck, or help you step up to the next level. The choice is yours.

So if you’re in the thick of it right now, check in with your self-talk. Is it keeping you small, or is it helping you grow?

Marketing is usually one of those things you know you should be doing more consistently.

Then Monday arrives.

There are jobs to manage, clients to call, staff needing answers and quotes waiting to go out. Marketing gets moved to later in the week, then next week, and eventually you realise you haven’t done much for a month.

This usually starts with good intentions.

The problem isn’t that you don’t understand the importance of marketing. It’s that without a plan, it becomes something you do when you have time.

Visibility is a leadership decision, not a personality trait.

You don’t need to suddenly be everywhere or spend hours creating content. You need to decide who you’re trying to reach, where you’re going to reach them and what you’re going to do consistently.

That’s why I created my free Marketing Plan.

It gives you a structure to sit down and think your marketing through properly, so you’re not coming up with something new every week or only thinking about leads when work starts slowing down.

If Your Year to Double is where you’re heading, having a more consistent way of bringing the right work into the business is part of that.

You can download the Marketing Plan here via the link in the comments.

Working In It Isn't Working On It

Being brilliant at the trade and being good at running the business are two completely different skill sets.

Most people start a business because they were excellent at the work itself. Best tradesman on the tools, best technician in the shop, best at the job that made clients keep calling.

Then they open the doors expecting that skill to carry the business too.

It doesn't. Being great at the trade tells you nothing about pricing, systems, hiring, or where the money's actually going.

This catches almost everyone out at some point. You end up buried in jobs, quotes, and admin, working incredibly hard in the business, while the business itself has no structure holding it up. Busy stops feeling like progress somewhere in there.

The shift that changes things is stepping back regularly to work on the business instead of just in it. Looking at pricing properly. Building a simple system so things don't rely on you remembering everything. Reviewing the numbers instead of guessing at how the month went.

You don't need to overhaul everything to start. Block one hour this week purely for business thinking. Not jobs, not client work. Just look at how the business itself is actually running.

The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Ge**er, a good one if you've never separated the technician from the business owner in your own head before.

Where are you still working in the business when it needs you working on it?

Losing a job to someone whose work genuinely isn't as good as yours stings in a particular way. It's tempting to write it off as bad luck or a client who didn't know better.

More often, the client simply found the other business faster. A quick search, an active profile, a handful of visible reviews, and the decision's basically made before quality ever really enters the conversation. Being brilliant at the trade doesn't count for much if nobody outside the job site actually knows about it.

The good news is this doesn't take a marketing overhaul, just a bit of consistency:

👉 Post one job this month you'd genuinely be proud to show a mate 📸
👉 Ask happy clients for a quick review while the job's still fresh
👉 Keep a simple folder of before-and-afters ready to share whenever needed

None of it needs to be polished. It just needs to actually exist somewhere a prospective client can find it.

What's one job from this month you'd actually be proud to post?

You’ve spent time meeting the client, looking at the job, working through the costs and putting the quote together.

Then it’s finally ready and the email that goes with it gets written in about 30 seconds.

“Hi John, please find your quote attached. Let me know if you have any questions.”

I get it. By that point you’re usually just trying to get the quote out and move onto the next thing.

But that email is part of the sales process too.

It’s your opportunity to bring the conversation back to what the client wants, explain what happens next and make it easy for them to come back to you.

It also becomes even more important when someone else in your team starts sending quotes on your behalf.

Clear communication is a leadership habit, not just a sales tactic.

That’s why I created a free Quote Email Template. It gives you a simple structure you can adapt for your business, rather than starting from scratch every time someone sends a quote.

If you’re working towards Your Year to Double, these little systems matter. Growth gets much easier when good client communication doesn’t rely on you personally writing every email.

You can download the template via the link in the comments.

What does the email that goes out with your quotes currently say?
