If Your Numbers Could Talk, What Would They Say?

A strange question perhaps.
But an important one.

If your business numbers could sit across the table from you today, what would they be trying to tell you?

Would they say:
you're growing faster than you realise
your pricing needs attention
cashflow deserves more focus
you've had a better year than you think
you're carrying too much personally
it's time to make different decisions

The numbers are always communicating something.
The challenge is knowing how to listen.
That's where good advice makes all the difference.

If you'd like help understanding what your numbers are trying to tell you before the financial year closes, email VBD and let's have a conversation.

The Client Who Thought The Business Was Slowing Down

A business owner came into a review convinced the business was slowing down.
The feeling had been building for months.
Sales felt harder.
Margins felt tighter.
Everything felt heavier.
When we looked at the numbers, something interesting appeared.

Revenue hadn't fallen.
Profit hadn't collapsed.
The business wasn't slowing down.
The business had changed.

The owner had taken on more staff.
Overheads had increased.
The business had become more complex.
What they were feeling wasn't decline.

It was growth.
That distinction completely changed the conversation.
Instead of trying to "fix a problem", they could focus on adapting to the next stage of the business.

Sometimes the numbers don't tell you that something is wrong.
Sometimes they're telling you something has changed.

If the business feels different this year and you're not sure why, email VBD. We'll help you understand what the numbers are trying to tell you.

The Number Business Owners Often Ignore

Most business owners know:
revenue
profit
bank balance
But there's another number that often tells a more useful story.

Consistency.
Can the business consistently:
pay wages
cover expenses
generate profit
support the owner's lifestyle

One great month doesn't build a strong business.
A pattern of sustainable performance does.

This is why June can be such a valuable checkpoint.
Not because of tax.

But because it gives business owners an opportunity to step back and ask:
"What did this year consistently look like?"
Because consistency is usually a better predictor of future success than isolated wins.

If you'd like help understanding the patterns behind your numbers, not just the results, email VBD and let's review the year together.

Joshua's Favourite Question: "Compared To What?"
Joshua often laughs that accountants ruin simple answers.

Someone says:
"Our wages have gone up."
Joshua asks:
"Compared to what?"
Someone says:
"Our profit is down."
Joshua asks:
"Compared to what?"
Someone says:
"We had a great month."
Joshua asks:
"Compared to what?"

The reason is simple.
Numbers on their own rarely tell the full story.
Context matters.

A higher wage bill might mean:
more staff
stronger growth
increased capacity
A lower profit month might simply reflect:
seasonal timing
planned investment
unusual one-off costs

The goal isn't to react to every number.
The goal is to understand the story behind it.
That's why Joshua spends so much time helping clients interpret trends rather than individual figures.

If you're looking at your numbers and aren't sure what they actually mean, email VBD. Sometimes the most valuable thing an accountant can provide is context.

Revenue Up. Profit Flat. What Is The Business Trying To Tell You?

One of the most common situations we see is a business that has grown revenue but doesn't feel significantly better off.
The owner says:
"We've had more work."
"We've been busier."
"We've grown."
"But somehow it doesn't feel like we're getting ahead."

That's usually because revenue is only one part of the story.
The numbers may be telling you:
costs have grown alongside revenue
margins have tightened
staffing expenses have increased
pricing hasn't kept pace with rising costs
the business is working harder for the same outcome

None of these are necessarily problems.
But they are signals.

The mistake many business owners make is celebrating revenue while ignoring what sits underneath it.

The real question isn't:
"Did revenue grow?"

It's:
👉 "Did the business improve?"
That's where meaningful financial conversations begin.

If your business has grown this year but you're not sure whether it's actually become stronger, email VBD and we'll help you interpret what the numbers are really saying.

What's The Question You're Avoiding?

Every business owner has one.

The question sitting quietly in the background.

Maybe it's:

How much tax am I actually facing?
Is cashflow healthy?
Am I taking too much out of the business?
Have I structured things properly?
Is the business performing as well as I think it is?

Most of the time, the question itself isn't the problem.

Avoiding it is.

June is a month for clarity.

And clarity almost always starts with asking the question.

Email VBD with the EOFY question you've been avoiding. You don't need to have all the details, just start the conversation.

The Client Who Was Worried About The Wrong Thing

A business owner recently came into an EOFY conversation worried about tax.

That was the issue keeping them awake.

They expected the meeting to focus entirely on their tax position.

Instead, the biggest opportunity was somewhere else.

After reviewing the business, it became clear that cashflow timing was creating far more pressure than tax.

Money was coming in.

Revenue was healthy.

But payment timing and planning were creating unnecessary stress.

Once that was identified, the conversation shifted completely.

The owner left feeling relieved.

Not because the tax disappeared.

But because they finally understood what was actually causing the pressure.

This happens more often than people realise.

Sometimes the thing you're worried about isn't the thing that needs attention.

If something about EOFY is worrying you right now, email VBD. Let's work out whether it's really the issue or whether there's something more important underneath it.

The Business Owners Who Sleep Best In June

There's an interesting pattern we see every year.

The business owners who seem calmest during June are rarely the ones with the lowest tax bills.

They're usually the ones with the fewest surprises.

Because they know:
where the business stands
what obligations are coming
what decisions have been made
what still needs attention

Certainty is often more valuable than perfection.

Many owners spend months worrying about what might happen.

The reality is that once the numbers are understood, most people feel relieved.

Even if the outcome isn't exactly what they hoped.

Because uncertainty is usually heavier than reality.

If uncertainty is creating more stress than the numbers themselves, email VBD. We'll help you understand where you stand before EOFY arrives.

"Should I Buy Something Before EOFY?"

Joshua hears this question constantly during June.

And the answer is almost never a simple yes or no.

The real conversation is usually:

Why are you buying it?

If the answer is:

we genuinely need it
it improves efficiency
it supports future growth
it's already planned

Then it may make sense.

But if the answer is:
👉 "Someone told me I should spend money to save tax"

Then it's worth slowing down.

Joshua spends a lot of June helping business owners separate:
good business decisions
from
tax-driven decisions.

The goal isn't to avoid tax.

The goal is to make decisions that improve the business.

Tax outcomes are important.

But they shouldn't be the only reason a decision gets made.

Thinking about making a purchase before 30 June? Email VBD before committing. A short conversation can help you understand the bigger picture.

"How Much Tax Am I Going To Have To Pay?"

If there is one question we hear more than any other in June, it's this.

"How much tax am I going to have to pay?"

It's a fair question.

But what often surprises business owners is that the better question is:

👉 "Why is the tax position what it is?"

Because once you understand that, the conversation becomes far more useful.

For example:

A larger tax bill might mean:

stronger profitability
business growth
higher margins
improved performance

Or it might reveal:

poor cashflow planning
unexpected income spikes
structural issues that need attention

The tax figure itself is only part of the story.

What matters is understanding how the business arrived there.

That's why our EOFY conversations aren't just about tax.

They're about helping business owners understand:

what's driving results
where the business stands
what lessons can be taken into the new financial year

Good advice doesn't stop at the number.

It explains the story behind it.

If you're wondering what your EOFY position may look like, email VBD. We'll help you understand the story behind the numbers, not just the number itself.
