Brisbane’s buffed bronzes ✨
Earlier this year, Brisbane City Council engaged ICS Brisbane to clean and conserve thirteen bronze public artworks across the city.
Located in some of Brisbane’s most iconic public spaces, including King George Square, Post Office Square and the City Botanic Gardens, the sculptures had been affected by weathering and environmental exposure, requiring specialist conservation treatment to restore their appearance and protect them for the future.
Over five weeks, conservators from ICS Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney worked together to carefully clean each sculpture, remove deteriorated wax coatings, treat and stabilise corrosion, and apply fresh protective finishes. The bronzes were then hand-buffed to reveal their rich patinas and renewed lustre.
Spanning more than a century of Brisbane’s public art history, from 1902 to 2018, each artwork received a tailored conservation approach to support its long-term preservation and continued enjoyment by the community.
