When is a good time to turn off your solar?
Probably when you’re having maintenance done by me, or if you’re not that lucky by others I guess. Your inverter is a very clever bit of machinery - it can detect when the power is out or the grid has become unstable and turns itself off without any intervention by you. It’ll also turn itself back on with just as much effort from you as well.
Turning your inverter off doesn’t stop DC voltages on your roof - in fact all inverters have a feature called earth fault detection. This wonderful feature tests the panels and array cabling for any faults before the system turns on - if there’s an earth fault present (from say a possum chewing wires or a cyclone ripping a panel off) the inverter will refuse to power up.
Typically it’ll start beeping like a microwave, emailing you (if it’s suitably connected and configured), or flash a heap of red lights saying EARTH FAULT, ISOLATION FAULT, CHECK GENERATOR or something to the same effect.
Leave your solar alone - my only exception to that rule would be if the inverter is going to go underwater.
If your inverter is beeping and carrying on from drinking to much water please give me a call or send me a message to my phone on 0424654370- I very rarely check the Facebook messages.
