Ask a locum if they want to go permanent and you'll usually get a pause before the answer.
Some genuinely love the flexibility. Choose their shifts, work their hours, keep control of their calendar.
But a lot of locums didn't set out to stay locum forever. They just never found a permanent role worth giving that flexibility up for.
The pay drop puts people off. So does losing control of the roster. So does picturing themselves back in a fixed five day week after years of picking and choosing.
The right permanent role doesn't ask you to give up what you liked about locuming. It's built around what you actually want. Fewer days if that's what suits you. More say in your roster. An owner who already knows how you work because they've used you as a locum before.
If going permanent has crossed your mind more than once, it's worth a real conversation about what that would actually look like.
