Have you heard? Something very special is coming to Perth…

For the first time ever, Jackson Pollock’s iconic Blue poles will be exhibited in Western Australia at the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

But look a little closer and there’s more to this celebrated work than first meets the eye.

Among the layers of paint are unexpected details including glass, cardboard and even Pollock’s own thumbprint — a fascinating glimpse into the physical process behind one of the most recognisable works of modern art.

Painted in 1952, Blue poles has become one of the most significant works in the National Gallery of Australia’s collection. Now, more than 50 years after its acquisition, it is making its way West.

Will you be making a trip to AGWA to see it for yourself? If you do, you might spot us there searching for that elusive thumbprint. 👀🔍

Well, the crickets have spoken… 🦗

Nobody guessed what it was, so here’s the reveal!

This is a Chinese Marriage Dowry Chest, dating to the early–mid 20th century.

With its richly weathered timber, decorative wrought ironwork and distinctive painted central panel, this is a wonderful example of where function and decoration come together, while its aged surface, layers of paint, hand-applied decoration and beautiful patina tell the story of its journey through time.

Did you know what it was? Or were you waiting for the reveal? 👀

From Consignment to Auction

What happens after an item comes through the door?

There’s a lot that goes on before the bidding begins.

From the initial consignment and careful assessment, through research, cataloguing and photography, to preparing the showroom for viewing - every stage plays a part in bringing an auction together.

Then comes auction night, when each piece finds its moment in the spotlight and, ultimately, a new home.

It’s a process that combines knowledge, experience and genuine appreciation for the objects entrusted to us.

What Did This Sell For? 👀

Estimated at $250 - $350… this unusual early pocket watch, dating to around 1720, went on to sell for an incredible $3,500 at our August Auction.

So what made it so interesting to collectors?

Early watches like this are fascinating pieces of horological history, and their age, unusual construction, provenance, maker and overall character can contribute to their appeal. It’s a great example of how rarity and collectability can sometimes create strong competition at auction.

We love seeing unexpected results like this - and it’s a reminder that you never quite know what will capture the attention of collectors!
