ABORIGINAL scientist Professor Alex Brown has been appointed to the CSIRO board of directors, becoming the first Indigenous scientist to serve on the national science agency’s board.

Prof Brown is a proud member of the Yuin Nation, with family connections to Nowra, Wreck Bay and Wallaga Lake on the NSW south coast.

He is Professor of Indigenous Genomics at the Telethon Kids Institute and was recently appointed as the director of the National Centre for Indigenous Genomics at the Australian National University.

Are you Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and interested in a career in the Construction Industry?
Australian Red Cross in partnership with Gold Coast School of Construction and Hutchinson’s Builders are currently seeking 8 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people willing to undertake an un-paid pre-employment program. The fully funded program will commence on the 17th February and will run for 12 weeks. The program will involve:
Employability skills training
Apprenticeship preparation
Hands on practical training on a live worksite
Accredited training – Certificate I in Construction*
Work placement
Career development
Personal development skills
* Participants who have already completed a Certificate I in Construction will not be eligible.
Graduates from the program will be assisted to find a suitable employer with a view to starting a full time career in the building and construction industry.
Prerequisites for Program:
Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander
Have a current ‘C’ class drivers licence and own transport (or ability to get rapidly with support)
Willing to undertake a 4 year apprenticeship in the construction industry
Interested in a career in the Construction industry
Must have great attitude and willing to work in a team environment.
Be willing to travel to Brisbane CBD and Bulimba
Community Information sessions will be held on:
- Wednesday 29th January at 11am at Umpi Korumba Housing, 74 Handford Road, Zillmere
- Thursday 30th January at 10am at CJ Green Fields Hall, Freeman Road, Inala.
