In April, we posted a few posts showing several LGA maps, Australian wide, showing how far communities are travelling further to access services, and where childcare centres are clustered. Thanks to the people who have participated, provided comments and advised us of areas of interest. These accessibility maps signal stark differences in distances families need to travel to access childcare centres.

Now it is time to wrap up this April childcare campaign.

One thing stands out:

Opportunities are rarely city-wide.

Accessibility is not evenly distributed, and neither is opportunity.

This final release focuses on two additional locations across NSW and QLD, reinforcing the trends we’ve consistently observed across the dataset.

What continues to stand out:
• High-density clusters creating strong competitive pressure
• Underserved pockets where accessibility remains limited
• Localised gaps that aren’t visible through top-line metrics

How to read the map:
Each polygon represents the area closest to an existing childcare centre.
• Smaller polygons → higher accessibility, more competition
• Larger polygons → lower accessibility, potential demand gaps

Across all locations analysed, one thing is clear: the best opportunities sit where access, demand, and supply fall out of balance.

Not every growth area presents an opportunity. But every gap tells a story.

Others reveal clear gaps, and that’s where the real opportunity lies.

In this release, we’ve mapped a new set of LGAs across VIC and WA to uncover how access to early learning actually varies on the ground.

What stands out:
• Pockets of oversupply where centres are highly clustered
• Underserved catchments where families travel further
• Uneven distribution that isn’t obvious from high-level data

What this map shows

Areas with smaller, clustered polygons indicate higher centre density, where residents typically have better access to childcare.

In contrast, larger polygons highlight areas where families may need to travel farther to reach a centre, indicating potential gaps in service coverage and spatial inequality.

As many of you know, demand and accessibility for childcare can vary significantly between LGAs, even within the same city.

Location isn’t just important. It’s decisive.

Potential high-rise apartment locations in Melbourne's suburbs mapped

🚨 Big shifts in Melbourne’s housing landscape
The Victorian Government has released draft maps for 25 new activity centres — part of a plan to rezone 50 areas around train and tram corridors for higher-density living.

🔑 What’s proposed:
Core zones: 6–16 storey apartments, exempt from VCAT review.
Catchment zones: 3–6 storeys, with heritage and landscape protections maintained.
Focus on delivering more housing options near transport to ease affordability pressures.

👥 Community response:
While the government frames this as making the city fairer and more accessible, residents are voicing concerns about whether local infrastructure — from open space to healthcare — can cope with the change.

🏗 Industry perspective:
Despite the rezoning, Linda Allison noted high construction costs and taxes mean we won’t see towers “popping up overnight.”

📅 What’s next:
Public consultation continues, with the final 50 centres expected by 2026.
