What a joy to have my last workshop of the year with the lovely bunch at Coffs Kids in Motion! Not to mention the sweet little Millie, who made it clear from scratch that she prefers more introverted ways of working…she even went straight to lie down on the southern end of the Team Management Wheel, to be precise 😉💙🩵💜

(You would have laughed Nicole Turnbull, Millie is very unlike Ravi the Therapy Dog who bounced and cartwheeled straight to the yellow while licking everyone 💛🐶👅 😅)

💙What makes you feel TRULY safe at work?

Safety is a whole-person experience. When employees feel safe, they perform better, and they are more engaged.

A recent Frontiers in Psychology study introduces 7 Domains of Sensed Safety. These are key factors that shape how we experience security in the workplace:

🌀Environment – The physical space that supports wellbeing
🌀 Social Climate – The culture & energy of the workplace
🌀 Relationships – Trust & support from colleagues and leaders
🌀 Body – Feeling physically safe & free from harm
🌀 Inner Experience – Managing stress & emotional wellbeing
🌀 Sense of Self – Feeling valued, confident & empowered
🌀 Spirit/Meaning – Finding purpose & fulfilment in your work

💡 When employees feel safe, they engage more, innovate more, and stay longer. But real safety doesn’t just happen; it’s cultivated. It starts with intentional leadership, open conversations, and the right support systems.

Psychological safety, inclusion, belonging, and trust is everything.

We will be talking about this (and much more) at the upcoming Safety Summit in Coffs Harbour. There is an epic lineup of speakers, delivering value of thousands of dollars. Because we care.

The day Nelson Mandela jumped on the plane with me, he turned and said:
“Courage is not the absence of fear—it’s inspiring others to move beyond it.”
For me, that captured the essence of authentic leadership. Especially when it comes to speaking up—something I struggled with in my younger years.

Speaking up is one of the bravest things we can do. To disagree respectfully. To point out behaviours that are not value-aligned. To not be the silent bystander while someone is mistreated.

Silence may feel safe. But it breeds mistrust, disengagement, and fear. When someone speaks up—even when their voice shakes—it gives others permission to do the same.

THAT is leadership.

Fake leadership? It’s performative. 🎭 It boasts. It speaks up, but in a harmful way. It sings it's own praises instead of making others shine. This is not the type of speaking up I am talking about.

Here’s the twist: The story and photo of Mandela and me isn’t real. I created the photo in 3 seconds using AI. Sadly, that’s the world we live in. We must sharpen our intuition to know what’s real and what’s fake. If leaders don’t walk the talk, trust erodes.

Thankfully, intuitive leadership is a skill we can grow. I’ll be sharing something exciting about this soon, can't wait to tell you more about it!

⚠️ PS – Please warn your family (especially the older generation). Don’t let them fall for fake photos and videos—even if it looks like you, sounds like you and walks like you!

Happy weekend everyone! Who is joining us at the Coffs Regional Safety Summit: Let’s Redefine Workplace Safety? Let me know if you are going, I would love to catch up.

This isn’t just about compliance—it’s about creating workplaces where people feel physically and psychologically secure. Too often, safety conversations focus on avoiding incidents rather than building cultures where employees can thrive. It’s time to change that.

I’m honoured to be speaking along with fellow strong and amazing leaders at the Summit right here in our home town, where industry leaders, regulators, and workplace professionals will come together to tackle the real challenges of workplace safety—both physical and psychosocial.

What you’ll take away:

💡Practical Strategies – How to engage leadership, gain buy-in, and make safety an integral part of your workplace culture.
💡Stay Ahead of Regulations – Hear from experts on the latest compliance, risk prevention, and claims insights.
💡Learn From Real-World Case Studies – Understand what happens when things go wrong—and how to prevent it.
💡Walk Away with a Clear Plan – Gain practical, proactive solutions to assess and mitigate psychosocial hazards in your workplace.

Grab this opportunity to be part of a bigger conversation about how we create healthier, safer, and stronger workplaces. This is not a compliance tick box. It is about leading in a way that save lives.

Use my code BLYDE for discount off your ticket 😊 and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Have you ever left a meeting and felt deflated—not because of what was said, but because of how it was said? That’s the power of micro-behaviours: the subtle, often unconscious cues that shape whether people feel safe enough to speak up, make mistakes, or share bold ideas.

In every team, there's an invisible social contract at play. Policies and values might be printed on the wall—but it’s the daily micro-interactions that determine whether psychological safety lives or dies.

👀 Eye contact
🎯 Tone
⏳ Interruptions
✅ Validation

And behind it all? The 🧣SCARF model—a neuroscience-backed framework that explains what the brain’s always scanning for:

👑 Status – Do I feel respected?
🔍 Certainty – Do I know what’s expected?
🤝 Autonomy – Do I have choice?
💬 Relatedness – Do I feel included?
⚖️ Fairness – Am I treated justly?

These five areas trigger either a threat or a reward response.
⚠️ Threat = shut down, disengage, resist
✅ Reward = contribute, collaborate, connect

In HR, leadership, and especially in local government, where public trust and internal culture matter deeply—these moments add up fast.

🧠 The takeaway:
It’s not always the big things that build or break trust.
It’s the small things, repeated over time.

🧣Which SCARF domain have you seen most at play?
