So sad 😞

For me, walking with fire embodies a deep connection that eludes verbal articulation. An integral part of my journey involves supporting and sharing knowledge with community members as they navigate their relationship with Cultural Fire. I had the opportunity to facilitate a Cultural burn on miggenbre Country at Buga Buga. The workshop convened a diverse group of professionals from various agencies, QNPWS, QFES, and community members, with the objective of fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and lasting partnerships.

I had the pleasure of hosting two exceptional individuals from Canada, who shared in the valuable principles of Caring for Country, Cultural Governance, and the matriarchal approaches to land management. This experience was a truly epic adventure. With hearts full and Country singing, this exchange highlights the significance of cross-cultural sharing, deep listening, and fostering meaningful relationships across the globe. The stories of our ancestors have long highlighted the importance of connections between our communities and those across the seas.

In partnership with GGFS, I facilitated a community/school camp out on Bundjalung Jagun it was designed to teach jarjum how to read Country. This involved recognising the complex layers of Country to foster a reciprocal lifestyle. Activities included language immersion, plant identification, observation of insects, birds, and animals, Cultural Fire, and swimming. During seasonal transitions, participants cleared the camp area, utilising customised workbooks. As children completed each stage, they received a pin to add to their Guardians collections.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to travel to BC Canada, to observe and to share in what Cultural Fire means to us. The importance of the resurgence of stewarding the land not only our way, but how doing this not only creates healthy land but healthy people. The benefits are always for the future.

Join us at The Dorrobbee Grass Reserve for an immersive experience of cultural burning, with Oli Costello, Executive Director, Jagun Alliance.

Wednesday 25th September 2024 9-2pm

Tickets $70 link in Bio via Humantix.

The reserve not only showcases remarkable biodiversity but also provides a window into the land’s deep cultural roots.

Located at the junction of Dunoon Road and Fraser Road, the enchanting Dorrobbee Grass Reserve is just north of Dunoon village. This crown land reserve, managed by the Dorrobbee Grass Reserve Trust in partnership with the Ngulingah Aboriginal Land Council, is one of the Northern Rivers’ best-preserved stands of Kangaroo Grass (Themeda australis). It offers a unique opportunity to delve into the region’s cultural heritage, as traditional Aboriginal gathering areas and travel routes now serve as crucial habitats for rare and culturally significant species.
