A space to be seen, heard, and understood.

A/Part of the Crowd is a microsite build for sharing real stories of loneliness from young people aged 18–25 across Australia. Through words, art, audio, and video, it creates a quiet place for reflection, connection, and understanding. This project forms part of the ALIVE National Centre’s loneliness initiative, hosted at The University of Melbourne, and is supported by the Medibank Better Health Foundation.

This platform balances emotional safety with usability allowing contributors to share stories anonymously, helping visitors explore content by theme or life transition. While Researchers and moderators required a low-maintenance tool they could manage without technical support.

Portable was engaged to bring it to life; scoping, designing, and building a solution that is both sustainable and future-ready. We worked closely with ALIVE researchers and lived experience advisors, the process was grounded in listening, iteration, and delivering meaningful outcomes at every stage. A/Part of the Crowd is now live and quietly in use, with a public launch planned for April 2026.

The platform offers a safe, thoughtful space to read, reflect, and, when ready, share, while providing scalable, sustainable infrastructure to support ALIVE’s ongoing research.

In Australia’s tech industry, gender pay gaps are still the norm. The national median sits at around 19%, and many large employers report gaps of 15–25%, most often in favour of men.

At Portable, we’re working to challenge that. While technology remains one of the most gender-imbalanced disciplines, our latest data shows that sustaining pay equity is possible.

How do you build psychological safety into your workplaces and digital spaces?

When WorkSafe Victoria partnered with Portable on the WorkWell program, the goal was to help organisations recognise and prevent psychological harm at work. By researching and uncovering practical tools and guidance that help leaders identify risks and respond early, the program enables workplaces to take psychological health seriously and create environments where people feel safe to speak up.

Meaningful Ageing Australia is strengthening spiritual care practice across the aged care sector.

In collaboration with their team, we developed “Meet Akira” — an interactive digital product that introduces personal care assistants to the practice of spiritual care through guided, scenario-based learning. Built through deep engagement with the sector, the experience supports frontline aged care workers across Australia to build confidence, capability, and practical understanding in their daily work with older people.

Proud to have delivered this work together.

Behind the scenes of every AI-powered product are servers that run day and night, consuming electricity and cooling water. As AI accelerates innovation across every sector, it’s also accelerating energy demand at staggering scales. Just this month, the Guardian reported that OpenAI’s new partnership with AMD will deploy hundreds of thousands of AI chips equivalent to six gigawatts of power, or the energy needs of five million US households, beginning in 2026. That tension between AI’s potential for public good and its physical cost to the planet is one we can’t ignore.

At Portable, we see this as one of the defining sustainability questions of our time. How do we use AI responsibly, when its power comes with a measurable environmental price?

The Department of Human Services South Australia (DHS SA), through its Office for Women (OFW), plays a pivotal role in advancing gender equity across South Australia. The OFW collaborates with government bodies, the private sector, and the wider community to drive systemic change in areas such as women’s leadership, economic security, safety, and health.

One such initiative is the Regional Safety Hubs network; local entry points that provide safe, community-based access to support for women and children experiencing or at risk of domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV). Since 2019, these hubs have grown in number and reach, with each one led by a local service organisation embedded in its region.

Recognising the growth and growing impact of this place-based approach, and in light of South Australia’s Royal Commission into Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence (established in July 2024), OFW engaged Portable to deliver an independent evaluation. The goal: to understand how the hubs are working in practice, what outcomes they’re delivering, and how future service investment and strategy could be informed by local insights.
