PERMITS SUSPENDED – Apologies for the delayed notice
Monday, 12 October 2026
The Snowy Monaro is forecast to experience HIGH fire danger conditions on Monday, 12 October 2026. As a result, all fire permits issued by the RFS have been suspended.
These conditions can create a real fire risk across our landscape, if you have been burning please check your previous burns.
ONE EMBER CAN END IT - Embers from a fire can spread quickly and quite a distance, putting communities well away from the main fire at risk.

FIRE PERMITS NOW REQUIRED IN SNOWY MONARO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA.
The Bush Fire Danger Period in the Snowy Monaro LGA started Thursday 1st October, 2026.
Fire permits need to be obtained for all fires in the open, with the exception of cooking fires and small recreational fires.
Fire permits are free of charge and can be applied for by any of the 3 means listed below:
- Go the the RFS website www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify (Choose Apply for a Fire Permit).
- By contacting the local Fire Control Centre- 02 6455 0455 during business hours.
- Contacting you local Rural Fire Brigade Fire Permit Officer.

BUSH FIRE DANGER PERIOD- SNOWY MONARO LGA- COMMENCING THURSDAY 1ST OCTOBER, 2026.
FIRE PERMITS REQUIRED.
The Bush Fire Danger Period will commence at midnight tonight, Thursday 1st October, 2026, in the Snowy Monaro LGA and continue until 31st March, 2027.
From midnight tonight, a fire permit is required for all fires in the open (with the exception of cooking & small recreational fires).
With continuing dry conditions across the district their is a significant risk of fires readily igniting and travelling through the landscape.
We are calling on all members of the community to assist in keeping our community safe from fire over the coming months by taking all care to stop fire ignitions.
Some ways you can help are:
- Ensuring any cooking/recreational fires are fully extinguished (using water) before leaving unattended.
- Do not undertake hot works (welding/grinding) in the open during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Do not undertake slashing or mowing during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Avoid driving any vehicles in areas of dry grass during the hotter, windier times of the day.
- Maintain your vehicles, mowers and equipment ensuring there is no build up of dry grasses in areas that could cause them to catch fire.

The smoke may be seen in the area, please only call 000 if you see an unattended fire.
Stay up-to-date using Hazards Near Me application.
As the burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the
following:
• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes;
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;
• Remove washing from clotheslines;
• Ensure pets have a protected area;
• If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on; and
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if
shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.

Tuesday, 29 September 2026 @ 1830hrs Bredbo Rural Fire Brigade will implement a strategic hazard reduction in Bredbo.
As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the
following:
• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes;
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;
• Remove washing from clotheslines;
• Ensure pets have a protected area;
• If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on; and
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if
shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.

Crews from across the district have been actively assisting landholders with fuel reduction burning on rural properties.

Like a lot of landholders right now, they're getting ahead of the Bush Fire Danger Period, which starts 1 October.

Once the Bushfire Danger Period starts, the rules tighten up, you will need a permit and the outlook is for a challenging spring and into summer.

Conditions are drying out across the district. If you're planning to burn, please do so safely and follow a few rules.

Before you light up:

🔥 Notify your neighbours 24 hours before you burn
🔥 Notify the RFS at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify, even outside the Danger Period 24 hours before you burn
🔥 Check the forecast, if its windy fires can escape quickly so burn to conditions
🔥 Have water, tools, a clear break and enough people on hand to control it if it moves.
🔥 Stay with it. Don't walk away until it's completely out

With strong winds forecast across parts of the Snowy Monaro this weekend, residents and landholders are urged to take extra care with any activity that could start a fire. Gusty conditions can quickly turn a small flame, spark or smouldering hotspot into a fast-moving grass or bush fire.

Previous burns are not always out. Heat can sit in logs, root systems and ash beds for days or weeks, and strong winds can reignite them. Check old burn sites and make sure they are cold before leaving them unattended.

Burning off is still a good way to reduce fuel loads and prepare your property, but it needs to be done safely. If you are planning to burn, consider waiting until the winds ease. If you do light up, keep it small, notify your neighbours and the Fire Control Centre beforehand, have water and people on hand, and stay with it until it is completely out.

Hot works such as welding, grinding, cutting or using machinery that may produce sparks should be postponed if they are not essential. If work must proceed, keep a cleared area around the task, have water or extinguishers on hand, maintain a fire watch, and monitor the area for at least 30 minutes afterwards.
Now is also a good time to review your bush fire survival plan, check your firefighting equipment, and report any unattended fire or smoke immediately.

A little preparation and caution can prevent a fire from becoming an emergency. Stay safe this weekend. 🔥🚒
