As we move into the colder months, fire agencies often see an increase in house fires as residents use their fireplaces and heaters to stay warm. With temperatures dropping and possible snow forecast across parts of the state in the coming days, it’s important you know how to stay safe.

Remember, you won’t smell smoke while you’re asleep, so make sure your bleeping smoke alarms are working. A working smoke alarm can save your life and give you and your family valuable time to escape a burning home.

HELICOPTER WINCHING TRAINING- COORNARTHA NATURE RESERVE AREA- GLEN FERGUS- TUESDAY 5/5/26.
If you see RFS Helitack 206 in the Coornartha Nature Reserve (Numeralla Road- Rose Valley Road) area this afternoon, don't be alarmed, as it is only a training exercise for some of our firefighting personnel maintaining their winching accreditations.
Ongoing practise is essential in maintaining these specialist skills and accreditations.

Tuesday, 28 April 2026 @ 1100hrs Snowy Monaro Rural Fire Service Brigades will implement a strategic hazard reduction in Tinderry, supported by aircraft.
The burn will continue to produce smoke across the Monaro District.
As the prescribed burn will generate smoke, hot embers and heat, it is important that you consider the
following:
• Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes;
• Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns;
• Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage;
• Remove washing from clotheslines;
• Ensure pets have a protected area;
• If you are driving a vehicle, slow down, keep windows up and turn headlights on; and
• If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if
shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice

Whilst fire permits are no longer required outside of residential areas, members of the community and visitors are reminded of the following obligations they must take if burning-off, being:
* Notification to all direct neighbours at least 24 hours in advance;

Your fire is your responsibility, and if you haven't put in place all of the above measures, don't strike the match!

Please help us to keep our community safe.
