CAN ANTIFOULING ALSO ADD THE WOW FACTOR?

Antifouling is an absolute necessity for protection & performance. But can it also complement a boat’s aesthetics?

While antifouling is largely submerged, it can still complement or contrast with the colour of the hull & topsides.

To help you, check the Awlgrip 3D Colour Visualizer to see how various colour combos can look:
https://www.awlgrip.com/asia-pacific/colors/customize

MarineWare stocks a wide range of antifouling products - in a range of colours. In fact, some boat owners alternate the colour to track the wear of their antifouling.

Naturally you need to consider compatibility of the antifouling with the previous coating. Don’t tint antifouling – it can affect the biocide properties.

MARINE TECHNOLOGY IN SPORT

When cyclists competed at the Velodrome at Glasgow Commonwealth Games, some of the biggest names in composites were on display.

One name you saw spinning on the disc wheels was ‘Southern Spas’. The company leverages its carbon fibre technology used for high-performance spars, “…to create wheels that not only enhance cycling performance but also provide exceptional strength and durability.”

Since 2016, Southern Spas has been the official wheel supplier to Cycling New Zealand. They say, “Leveraging our unique expertise in lightweight, high-strength materials, we custom made wheels that deliver superior aerodynamics, speed, and stability, key factors in competitive cycling.”

https://southernspars.com/discover-carbon-fibre/

They’re not the only composites innovator in sport. Cycling showcases composites technology from names like car maker Lotus (UK team), and leading European and Asian manufacturers. While the games are over, the pursuit of excellence continues.

MarineWare admires the pursuit of performance, speed, strength and advancing technology, whatever route it takes. Whatever you’re building, we may have the composite materials you need:

BOND DISSIMILAR MATERIALS WITH WEST SYSTEM G/FLEX

West System’s online resource 'Epoxyworks' has some excellent tutorials on how to tackle some challenging jobs.
https://www.epoxyworks.com/repair-a-keel-with-gflex-epoxy/

Recently, a boat owner asked about repairing his cast-iron wing keel. After looking at the boat, the West System technical team recommended using G/flex® Epoxy.

G/Flex is a toughened epoxy, viscous enough not to drain out of a joint, and resilient enough to absorb the stress of expansion, contraction, shock and vibration.

G/Flex can bond materials including aluminium and other metals, plastics, fibreglass, ceramic, masonry, glass, damp wood, difficult-to-bond wood species and more. The result can be a strong, durable bond.

MarineWare stocks an extensive range of West System products that deliver incredible results:

GURIT FIRST ABOARD ELECTRIC FERRIES

Gurit is collaborating with some innovative builders of zero-emission commercial ferries. And soon, the cities of Sydney and Perth will be benefitting from these radical vessels.

One of the big issues with electric ferries is reducing weight. Take the 132 passenger ‘East by West’ ferry operating in Wellington NZ since 2021. Powered by 5½ tonnes of Lithium-ion batteries, its construction must not only be lightweight, but also durable enough to withstand unpredictable marine conditions. So Gurit stepped in.

Another vessel - the 10-seater Vessev VS–9 - has been operating since Jan 2025 on Auckland harbour. It’s the first time that an electric hydrofoiling vessel, certified for commercial use, has been used in a tourism application anywhere in the world.

Skipper Jeremy Rei, who's also sailed conventional ferries for years, says “once we’re up on the foils, it feels like flying”.
https://www.vessev.com/vessels/vs-9

Gurit was also heavily involved with supplying materials to the two 24m. EV Maritime-designed ferries built by McMullen & Wing, carrying 200 passengers at 23-25knots.
https://www.gurit.com/ev-maritime-launches-first-fully-electric-ferry-with-gurit-composite-solutions/

The vessels are part of EV Maritime’s wider mission to reduce maritime emissions and deliver cleaner, quieter, and more efficient public transport options on the water.

Gurit’s role in this project highlights how composite material innovation can make this mission a reality. Their lightweight properties directly enhance the energy efficiency of electric propulsion, while their strength and durability ensure reliable performance in demanding marine environments.

EV Maritime’s latest project is building the first battery-electric ferries for Perth.

https://www.boatingnz.co.nz/2026/07/aucklands-ev-maritime-lands-role-in-perths-new-electric-ferry-fleet/

Closer to home, Sydney Harbour is set to host trials of electric hydrofoiling vessel technology following an agreement between Vessev and project partners developing a future water transport network for the city.

Whatever you’re building, our Gurit range including AMPRO™ epoxies could be just what you need:
