FREE POWER. REAL SAVINGS?

Three hours of free electricity every day sounds like an easy win. But whether it actually saves you money depends on how your household uses electricity.

Under the Australian Government's Solar Sharer Offer, eligible households in NSW, South-East Queensland and South Australia can access up to 3 hours of free electricity every day, with a daily cap of 24kWh. The free window is 11am - 2pm in NSW and South-East Queensland, and 12pm - 3pm in South Australia.

The idea is simple: Australia has abundant solar generation in the middle of the day, so households are being encouraged to shift more of their electricity use into that period.

That could mean running your dishwasher or dryer, charging an EV, using heating or cooling, or charging a home battery during the free window where practical.

But there's an important catch: The entire electricity bill isn't free.

You'll still pay the daily supply charge and electricity used outside the free period. The Government recommends comparing the offer's rates with your current plan and considering your household's routine before switching.

So the real question isn't simply “How much free electricity do I get?” It's: “Can I shift enough of my energy use to make a meaningful difference to my total bill?”

CAN THE GRID SWITCH OFF YOUR SOLAR? ☀️⚡

It sounds alarming, but there’s an important reason Australia is introducing systems that can temporarily reduce rooftop solar generation.

South Australia is putting its emergency **solar backstop** to the test, with around 100,000 rooftop solar systems expected to be temporarily curtailed for less than an hour.

Why? On exceptionally sunny days, rooftop solar can generate enormous amounts of electricity at a time when overall demand is relatively low. If there’s more electricity being generated than the grid can safely manage, the system needs a way to respond.

The important part for homeowners: Your solar being switched off does NOT mean your home loses electricity.

The backstop is designed as a last-resort grid management measure, helping maintain stability while Australia continues to add more and more rooftop solar.

And the scale of change is pretty remarkable.

The challenge for Australia is no longer simply generating more renewable energy. It’s learning how to manage, store and use that energy intelligently.

BEFORE YOU BUY A BATTERY, CHECK THIS. 🔋

One of the easiest mistakes to make when comparing home batteries is focusing on how many kilowatt-hours they can store.

But there's another number that matters just as much. How much power can the system actually deliver?

Your battery's capacity is measured in kWh - how much energy it can store. Your system's power output is measured in kW - how much electricity it can deliver at one time.

Those aren't the same thing. And, if your household uses high-demand appliances, the difference becomes particularly important.

Think:

🔌 Large ducted air conditioning
🚗 EV charging
💧 Electric hot water
🍳 Induction cooking
🏠 Multiple high-energy appliances operating together

There's also another layer for homes with three-phase power.

A three-phase system's total inverter capacity is distributed across the phases. That means a high total system rating doesn't necessarily mean you can put that entire amount of power through one phase.

So before choosing a battery, don't just ask: “How many kWh do I get?”

Ask: “Will this entire system be able to deliver the power my home needs?”

Because you don't want to discover after installation that the battery has plenty of energy stored, but your system isn't configured for the loads you actually want to run.

That's why proper design matters.

Australia has passed 500,000 home batteries. Here's why that matters. More than 500,000 batteries have now been installed under the Federal Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program, marking a major milestone in Australia's transition towards household energy storage.

And when you look beyond the headline number, the story becomes even more interesting. Australia already leads the world in rooftop solar, with more than one in three Australian households having solar on their roof.

The next step for many of those households is storage.

Solar panels can generate plenty of electricity during the day, but households don't stop using energy when the sun goes down.

That's where batteries come in. By storing solar energy generated during the day, households can have access to that stored energy later, helping them get more use out of the energy their solar system produces.

And according to the Australian Energy Market Operator's most recent quarterly report, the growing number of home batteries is doing more than helping individual households. Batteries are reshaping electricity demand across the grid, supplying household energy after sunset, reducing the evening peak and putting downward pressure on bills.

What's particularly interesting is where the uptake is happening. More than 75% of batteries installed under the program have been in outer-suburban and regional communities.

In Western Sydney, the growth has been especially significant. The Mitchell electorate has recorded 6,958 battery installations, representing more than 10% of households. It has moved from 108th nationally in 2024 to third nationally for battery uptake.

So, 500,000 batteries isn't just a milestone. It's a sign that Australian households are increasingly looking beyond simply generating solar power.

They're asking: How can I store the energy I generate and use it when I actually need it?

That's an important conversation, but it's also one that needs to be approached properly. The biggest battery isn't automatically the best battery.

Your household's energy consumption, existing solar system, usage patterns, evening demand and future plans all matter when determining what a suitable system looks like.

With more Australians switching to EVs, home charging is becoming a much bigger part of household electricity use. But here's something homeowners may not think about when choosing an EV charger:

It needs to work with the rest of your energy system.

Think about what is happening inside your home:

Could your household be missing out on energy savings?

A new report from 7NEWS is putting a spotlight on something many Australians may not realise: there are a range of energy rebates, concessions and home-upgrade programs available but eligibility differs from state to state, and some of the potential support is substantial.

For example, the report highlights:

🔹 NSW: Up to $285 off electricity for eligible concession cardholders, plus a forthcoming program expected to provide up to $4,000 for eligible energy-efficient home upgrades, including solar panels.

🔹 Queensland: Up to $399 off electricity for eligible concession cardholders and seniors, plus up to $3,500 towards solar panels on eligible rental properties.

🔹 Victoria: An ongoing 17.5% electricity discount for eligible concession cardholders after the first $171.

🔹 Western Australia: Up to $3,800 towards a home battery for eligible households.

🔹 ACT: Rebates of up to $5,000 for eligible energy-efficient home upgrades.

And there's another interesting point for households that don't qualify for a concession.

Canstar data cited by 7NEWS suggests Brisbane households could potentially save up to $456 a year simply by moving to the lowest-priced electricity plan available.

So before assuming there's nothing available to help reduce your energy costs: Check what applies to your household.

Some programs require applications, some have specific opening and closing dates, and eligibility can depend on your income, household circumstances, concession status and state.

Australia's rooftop solar market is still running at record levels.

If you've been wondering whether Australians are still investing in solar, the latest numbers provide a pretty clear answer.

According to new SunWiz data reported by pv magazine Australia, 339.2 MW of new rooftop solar capacity was registered across Australia in July 2026.

That's a 6% increase from June's 322 MW.

And July is only part of the bigger picture.

From January through July 2026, Australia added approximately 2.383 GW of new rooftop solar capacity - 43% more than the same period in 2025.

The July figures also show some interesting changes in what homeowners are installing:

🔹 The national average system size reached 10.06 kW.

🔹 10-15 kW systems accounted for 122.6 MW, approximately 36% of July's total installations.

🔹 The 6-8 kW segment contributed another 60 MW.

🔹 15-20 kW systems contributed 45.3 MW.

🔹 Overall July installations remained significantly above the long-term monthly trend of approximately 285 MW.

In other words, Australia's rooftop solar market may have eased from its April peak, but it is still operating at exceptionally high levels.

And there's an important lesson here for homeowners:

The question isn't simply whether you should get solar. It's whether the system you choose is actually right for your home.

Your electricity consumption, roof space, household size, appliances and future energy plans all matter when determining the right system size.
