A group of licensed fishers and deckhands of the Lakes and Coorong Fishery participated in a TAFE course for their Coxswain grade 1 qualification Over the past 4 weeks.
The Southern Fishermans Association secured funding to make this course free of charge, saving thousands of dollars per person. They just had to get to Murray Bridge each day and have to complete a first aid course . Obviously not a lot of fishing was happening while this was going on But it will pay dividends in the future by complying with The Australian Maritime safety Authority requirements.

Normally this course would cost:
Coxswain Grade 1 Near Coastal
MAR20324 – Certificate II in Maritime Operations $5390
Shipboard Safety
MARSS00008 – Skill Set $1120
2026 Marine Radio Operator’s VHF & HF Skill Set
MARSS00010 – Skill Set$350
Total cost $6860

While there are some subsidies available it is unclear whether many would qualify individually

So hats off to those that took time off fishing to complete their course Which gives them a qualification for the future regardless of whether they stay in the fishery.

These oyster and mussel shells were collected down in a southern Lagoon They're from an old oyster Reef and mussel area. That area is now regularly a hypersaline environment , But demonstrate at part of its history It has been a more marine environment.
If we could restore the southern Lagoon to a more marine environment through Better Water Management Then we could restore these oyster Reefs and mussel beds which will help filter the water and keep it cleaner for the other animals birds and plants that normally live in that area
Fix the environment and the fish will look after themselves

Isn’t this amazing!

This week the GIS team in at the SA DEW have prepared a data portal, so all the DEW-funded urban jetties and Coorong plankton count data is publically accessible via a button on their front page, or directly via the link below. This is how open data and open government should be.

Direct observation is essential to understanding the problem. Senator Sarah Hanson Young conducted a fact-finding mission, engaging with local fisherman, Glen Hill, to understand the algal bloom's impact on the ecosystem. She was also keen to examine the effectiveness of departmental water management, MDB issues, and research initiatives concerning the Coorong.
