Diatreme Resources was delighted to recently host Cooktown local and James Cook University student Teala, who spent time in the field with Diatreme’s environmental team, gaining first-hand experience of where a career in ecology might take her.
Here’s what Teala had to say about the experience:
“My name is Teala, and I grew up in Cooktown. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Ecology and Zoology through JCU, and recently had the opportunity to spend some time in the field with the environmental team at Diatreme Resources. I had an absolute blast!
"It was such a fun and valuable experience and gave me the chance to learn more about the ecosystems right here in our own backyard. It was fascinating discovering the incredible diversity of plants and animals that I've probably walked past hundreds of times without giving them a second thought. Now I find myself trying to identify every lizard I walk past and appreciating all the little creatures that make Cape York such a special place.
"Most importantly, the experience helped me narrow down the type of career I'd like to pursue after university. Spending time with professionals in the field and seeing the work first-hand gave me a much clearer picture of where I see myself in the future, while giving me practical experience to complement my university studies.
"A huge thank you to Diatreme Resources for the opportunity to learn from such a knowledgeable and passionate team. I'm incredibly grateful for the experience and everything I learned.”
