Interview questions ⤵️
How to explain why you’re looking to leave your current role⠀ ⠀
When it comes to actively searching for a new job whilst currently employed, there are a lot of fine lines to be aware of and possible scenarios to be prepared for.
One of the latter is explaining to a prospective employer why you’re looking to leave your current role.
This can be tricky, but with a bit of guidance from us you can answer this common interview question confidently and professionally.⠀ ⠀
1️⃣ Keep it professional⠀
⠀
This is the number 1 rule when answering questions about why you’re looking to leave your current role. No matter how well you’re getting along with your interviewer, under no circumstances should you bad mouth your current employer. Regardless of whether you think you have some personal connection with the person sitting opposite you or not, little good will come from dishing the dirt on your current boss or co-workers. You’ll be judged for the way you discuss this topic, so tread lightly.⠀ ⠀
⠀
2️⃣ Be “appropriately honest”⠀
⠀
Honesty is the best policy – most of the time. Being “appropriately honest” when discussing your reasons for leaving your current role means striking a balance between disclosing the genuine reasons you’re looking for a new opportunity, without being negative or unprofessional in discussing your employer or other co-workers. For example, if you’re leaving because a change of structure has left you with a supervisor that just doesn’t get you, you might say that a change of structure in your current team has given you the opportunity to reassess your goals and revaluate where you might be more appropriately challenged in your role. ⠀ ⠀
⠀
3️⃣ Put a positive spin on it⠀
⠀
Just like you would for any other interview question, positively framing your response and tying it to the current role for which you’re applying is a no-brainer. You’ll come across as professional, proactive, and informed about your desired role – all qualities that a prospective employer should value.
