AWC is launching a National Feral Cat Research Program to find new ways to control one of Australia’s most destructive introduced predators, while scaling up our current efforts nationwide.

Feral cats are a primary driver of mammal extinctions and declines across the country, killing an estimated two billion native animals every year.

The program will bring together research, on-ground conservation and collaboration across the sector to strengthen our ability to protect Australia’s wildlife from feral cats.

Koala breeding season is just around the corner, although generally running from September to February, koalas are mobile animals, often on the move, as we have seen from recent sightings around Exeter. Based on community records and sightings, we have identified a number of areas with the LGA where koalas a susceptible to vehicle strike, particularly during the breeding season when koalas are on the move. Please be vigilant when driving in these areas.

A new species of skink has been confirmed 🤩 The Mutawintji Board of Management and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) found the endangered skink, named Kungaka, in the Broken Hill Complex Bioregion at Mutawintji National Park, with the Australian Museum formally identifying this lizard as a distinct species.

Recent surveys indicate there are less than 20 skinks in this national park, making it the rarest reptile in Australia, and at high risk of extinction 🫢

The Mutawintji Board, with the support of NPWS, will continue to survey the species unique population to better understand it and implement conservation actions to protect its critical habitat 💚
