At Domatic Access, we regularly receive requests asking whether Performance Solutions can be used to *avoid* providing access under the NCC.

The short answer is, no – a Performance Solution is not a free pass or exemption. It’s simply an alternative way to meet the same Performance Requirements as the Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions.

There are only very limited situations where access might be *unreasonable or unsafe* for a person who lives with a disability to enter – for example, certain hazardous plant rooms that are restricted to trained maintenance staff and not normally occupied. Even then, any exemption needs to be clearly justified, documented, and still achieve the intent of the NCC.

Because this comes up so often, we’ve put together a **practical guide** explaining:

* When Performance Solutions can and can’t be used
* How “unreasonable or unsafe” areas (like some plant rooms) are assessed
* How to approach alternative, compliant design outcomes

As Access Consultants, we work closely with Building Surveyors and Architects to develop solutions that are practical on site and meet the NCC Performance Requirements for equitable and dignified access.

We are excited to announce that we are partnering with Scope’s Communication and Inclusion Resource Centre to deliver a webinar to Access Consultants on the 27th on November at 12pm AEDST.

Titled “Communication Access and its role within Universal Access Design”, Jacob will be sharing his personal experience with accessing the community, where he continues to face communication access barriers. In partnership with his colleague from Scope, Sarita Slater, they will introduce the concept of Communication Access and how it contributes to Universal Design.

This topic is really close to Jacob’s heart, as it brings his passion for advocating for the rights of people with communication access requirements and his passion for creating accessible spaces.

In this session, Jacob and Sarita will highlight Communication Access, as well as discuss its application to Universal Access and current legislation. They will showcase examples from organisations that have taken a lead role in ensuring their services are Communication Accessible and describe the role that Access Consultants can take in raising awareness of Communication Access.

Most often it is the case that these non-compliances could have been picked up earlier on in the design process.
