Good news for small businesses: the $20,000 instant asset write-off is now permanent.
From 1 July 2026, eligible small businesses with an annual turnover of less than $10 million can immediately deduct the full cost of eligible assets costing less than $20,000.

And because the threshold applies per asset, businesses can potentially claim the write-off across multiple eligible purchases throughout the financial year.

For Bookkeepers, this is an important change to be across when supporting clients with asset purchases, record keeping and conversations around upcoming business investment.
Read more from ICB on what the permanent $20,000 instant asset write-off means for small businesses.

💳 Card payment surcharge changes are coming!

From 1 October 2026, businesses can't apply a separate surcharge when customers pay by card. This includes Visa, Mastercard, eftpos and American Express transactions.

Until then, businesses must continue to follow the current card payment surcharging laws.

📢 Important!
Businesses will still pay card processing fees, although reduced interchange fee caps may help lower costs for small businesses.

These changes only affect card payment surcharges. Other charges, such as hospitality weekend and public holiday surcharges, booking fees and similar fees, are not affected.

✅ What should businesses do now?
Review your pricing, payment processes and payment provider arrangements ahead of the changes to understand how they may affect your costs and customers.

➡️ No offsets

Final window: March 2026 quarter (if paid by 30 June)
After that, there’s no buffer.

Here's a quick tax saving tip for your Year End planning!

💡Review your Stock on Hand

If you operate a business that deals in stock or inventory, then review your stock valuation and write down or write off any stock that is slow moving, damaged or obsolete. Complete a stock take and remember that stock can be valued at the lower of cost or market value. Small businesses may be able to avoid doing a formal stock take if the balance of their stock has not changed by more than $5,000 in the last year.

Time to make sure your Super Guarantee is paid for the Quarter. Pay now to avoid penalties!!!

Super guarantee payments are only considered ‘paid’ when the super fund receives them.

If you use a clearing house, you need to allow enough time for the payment to reach each of your employees’ super funds by 28 January.
