"There's the environmental issues that we're dealing with, there's the human rights issues that we're dealing with, and Indigenous people are at the peak of all of those different conversations that are happening with very limited resources, and this is where it's really important that we talk about autonomy" - Cissy Gore Birch, ICIN Co-Chair👏

Congratulations to North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance Ltd and everyone involved in this webinar. Important conversations about Indigenous People's right to define terms of engagement when it comes to climate and biodiversity outcomes on Country. Have a listen in the comments on the original post📢

Last week, we hosted the Reimagining Conservation webinar: Cultural Licence to Respond, with more than 100 attendees joining the conversation.

⭐🎤We’d like to acknowledge and thank facilitator, Cissy Gore-Birch and guest speakers Barry Hunter, Chrissy Grant, Dr Cass Hunter, and Craig North for sharing their valuable insights on the role of cultural authority, Indigenous knowledge systems and leadership in shaping the future of conservation in Australia.

Thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the important discussion. If you missed it, the recording is available🔗 in comments.👇🏽

Indigenous people have significant rights and interests in carbon.

As part of the carbon farming outreach program, funded by Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, ICIN worked with our directors and members to create a resource on consent and Indigenous people's rights and interests in carbon projects.

If you are interested in learning more about the rights of Indigenous people when it comes to carbon projects, you can find the full resource below.

In the words of Cissy Gore-Birch:
"It always was, always will be, Aboriginal land" ❤️🖤💛

Today on Mabo Day, we honour the life and legacy of Eddie Koiki Mabo, whose brave fight for justice and land rights paved the way for Native Title in Australia.

We also acknowledge four other plaintiffs and Meriam people - Reverend David Passi, Sam Passi, James Rice and Celuia Mapo Salee.

On 3 June 1992, the High Court handed down the historic Mabo Decision, ending the myth that Australia was 'terra nullius' - land belonging to no one - and recognising the enduring connection Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal people have always had to Country.

✊🏾 Since then, there have been hundreds of successful Native Title claims across the nation.

TSRA offices across the region - including ranger sites - are closed today to observe the Mabo Day special bank holiday.
