Do you know what does a compaction test actually tell us?

When soil or fill is placed during construction, simply flattening it down isn't enough.

Compaction testing helps determine whether that material has been compacted to the required density - giving the project team confidence that the ground has been prepared in accordance with the project requirements.

Why does that matter?

Properly compacted material helps provide a stable base for what's being built above it. If areas don't meet the required specification, they can be identified and addressed before construction progresses.

What looks solid under your feet doesn't necessarily mean it's ready to build on. 👷

Before roads, slabs, foundations and other infrastructure go in, testing can be used to verify whether the prepared ground is performing as required.

Compaction and field testing can provide important information about the material beneath the surface - helping identify areas that may require further work before they're covered by the next stage of construction.

And that's important.

Because finding an issue during testing is a lot easier than finding it after you've built on top of it.

Our team is providing compaction compliance and concrete compliance testing throughout the works - helping verify that the materials and construction meet the required project specifications.

One day might see us testing a residential or commercial site close to home. The next could have our team on a mine site, railway project, road upgrade or major infrastructure project hundreds of kilometres away.

When you’re building infrastructure to support 150-tonne dump trucks, ground performance isn’t something you want to assume.

Geotech Australia recently carried out plate load testing for a proposed heavy vehicle workshop, verifying how the prepared platform actually performed under load before construction began.

And importantly - the testing did exactly what it was there to do.

While much of the platform performed as expected, testing identified a localised area of unstable ground that required remediation.

Finding it now means it can be addressed and retested before foundations, slabs and permanent infrastructure are built over it.

That's the value of getting the right testing done at the right stage.

Mix design development in action. 🧪🏗️ There’s a lot more to developing a specialised pavement mix than simply finding the right recipe.

The Geotech Australia team has been working alongside industry on the development and validation of a specialised cementitious pavement mix designed for heavy-duty applications.

And developing the mix is only part of the challenge.

Our team has also been working through how its performance can be reliably tested - from the controlled environment of the laboratory through to what actually happens during full-scale construction in the field.

That means looking at everything from moisture and density relationships and field compaction through to specimen preparation, strength development, construction consistency and practical quality control.

Because when a material doesn't behave like conventional concrete, conventional testing methods don't necessarily tell the whole story.

We won't be sharing the recipe - that's where the clever stuff stays behind the scenes. 😉

But it's another great example of Geotech Australia combining laboratory testing, field experience and technical expertise to help turn an idea into something that can be confidently delivered in the real world.
