**Left With No Choice**
These are sad times. The transport industry was already living on the edge with companies collapsing by the hundreds. The ones who were holding on for dear life have now been hit with the final straw.
Fuel costs have now pushed some owner operators and small fleets to take their trucks off the road.
When running a truck costs more than it earns, the maths is brutal. There is nowhere left to absorb the hit.
Drivers are walking away from an industry they gave everything to. Rigs are sitting idle. Freight is going undelivered.
The supply chain this country depends on runs on diesel and on the people willing to drive it. Price them off the road and eventually everyone feels the consequences.
What makes this worse is that when experienced drivers leave and find other work they rarely come back.
We saw it happen during COVID and the industry never fully recovered from it.
When those seats get filled again they are often filled by inexperienced drivers or by workers brought in from overseas.
This oil crisis does not just push up fuel costs. It drains the industry of the experienced people who hold it together.
That damage does not show up on a fuel price board but it runs deep and it lasts a long time.
