The AusAlert test is coming this Monday at 12:00 pm AWST to test an Australia-wide national mobile alert system 📲

Compatible mobile phones will show a message and a siren will sound for 10 seconds, even if your phone is on silent.

🚒🚒 PLEASE NOTE: AusAlert does NOT replace EmergencyWA at this stage. The national system is still being tested. Information about integration with EmergencyWA will be coming down the track. 🚒🚒

By the way: for some family, friends or neighbours, the test on Monday might feel confusing if you they don't know what to expect.

Take a moment to let them know:
• It's genuine, run by the Australian Government
• Will never ask for personal or banking details, or for them to click on a link
• Works with hearing aids and text-to-speech

People with concealed phones are advised they can turn off or place their mobile on aeroplane mode for at least an hour ahead of Monday's test, and for at least 24 hours after to avoid the alert.

Now would be a great time to get those longer term projects going - as well as clearing away any fallen trees or branches from recent storms.

Otherwise, while you're indoors and out of the rain, check your smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, and review and update your evacuation packing lists. Emergency and evacuation plans should always be revised every year - you and your family's (and pet and property) needs will change over time and what used to work, might not anymore.

Many house fires start from everyday activities and escalate quickly. Increasingly, fires are also linked to modern household products such as battery-powered devices and electrical items. 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸. Keep reading for some handy tips.

Modern homes rely on more electrical devices than ever before, including products powered by lithium-ion batteries such as power tools, e-scooters, power banks and mobility devices.

To reduce risk:
⁣
⚡Avoid overloading power boards and outlets
⚡Replace damaged cords or appliances
⚡Only use chargers designed for your devices
⚡Avoid charging devices overnight or when unattended
⚡Do not use damaged or swollen batteries
⚡Avoid mixing incompatible chargers and batteries
⚡Be cautious when purchasing electrical products or batteries online, some may not meet Australian safety standards


𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝗳𝗲𝗹𝘆⁣

Heaters are a common cause of winter fires if not used correctly.
⁣
🔥Keep heaters at least one metre away from furniture, bedding and clothing
🔥Never dry clothes, towels or other cloths on heaters
🔥Turn heaters off before leaving the house or going to bed
🔥Check cords and plugs before use
⁣
Also take care with other winter items such as:

⚡Electric blankets
🔥Wheat bags
🔥Portable or decorative heaters
🔥Ensure these products are in good condition and used according to instructions

An unexpected deluge has flooded homes and public facilities in the South West WA town of Harvey. The community was pelted with 40mm of rain in one hour.

After that epic storm, it's time to clear any fallen trees from your firebreaks, tidy up debris, check and clean your chimney flue, and catch and store as much rain as you can to build up your water supplies ready for summer. 𝗠𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿! Give your property a solid makeover this month in preparation for winter storms, and start getting your access routes restored and ready for next fire season.

Winter is a great time to chip away at bigger projects and ⛈️𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽⛈️ 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 🔥𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽🔥 (and vice versa). Prune overhanging branches back from your fences, buildings (and cars!), de-clutter your verandah, undertake fence and gate maintenance, secure your trampolines, and spend some time planning your next big bushfire preparation project.
