Dear local Deviotees and surrounds, what a start to Autumn, cold, blustery and we even had small hail yesterday. This means our fruit will take a little longer to ripen -we are hoping for some more sun next week. We ask that you suspend your burning until our fruit is off as it can have an extremely detrimental effect to the flavour of the grapes. Think Pinot noir with aromas of burger rings 🥴🤮. At this stage we are hoping the majority of fruit will be off by the third week in April, and the rest by early May. With the 2026 Tassie wine grape harvest now underway (and running much later than usual), it’s a timely reminder that vineyards are particularly vulnerable to smoke exposure right now.
After a challenging, long and slow season, growers are finally at the pointy end of harvesting wine grapes to craft exceptional Tassie wine. Even small amounts of smoke can cause lasting damage to wine grapes (and it has a cumulative effect), with the potential to impact wine quality at a critical time. And smoke doesn’t stay put – it can drift well beyond its source and still have an effect.
Wine Tasmania encourages anyone in or near grape-growing areas to have a quick chat with neighbouring vineyards before lighting a fire to discuss any potential risks. There may be limited risk based on weather conditions and the stage of harvest.
Sometimes holding off for a day or two can make all the difference.
