In today's fast-paced business environment, having a motivated and engaged workforce is more important than ever. Unfortunately, recent studies have shown that more than 75% of staff are coming to work not-engaged. As a result, companies that fail to prioritize staff engagement and professional development are at a significant disadvantage when it comes to succeeding in 2023.

One of the key benefits of having an engaged workforce is that it leads to increased productivity and performance. When employees are engaged, they are more likely to go above and beyond their job responsibilities, which can ultimately lead to greater success for the company. Additionally, engaged employees are less likely to leave their job, which can help to improve employee retention and reduce recruitment costs.

Moreover, engaged employees are more likely to provide better customer service, which can lead to enhanced customer satisfaction. This, in turn, can lead to greater customer loyalty and increased revenue. Furthermore, a workforce that is engaged and motivated is more likely to be innovative and creative, which can help a company to stay ahead of the competition.

Offering professional development is another key strategy that companies can use to succeed in 2023. Professional development provides employees with the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge, which can lead to greater job satisfaction and greater opportunity for advancement. Additionally, professional development can help to increase employee engagement, as employees are more likely to feel valued and appreciated when they are given the opportunity to learn and grow.

Implementing professional development within a company requires a few key steps. First, it is important to assess the needs of employees to determine what types of training and development are most appropriate. Next, a plan for professional development should be developed, including a budget for the necessary resources. Finally, it is important to measure the effectiveness of professional development in order to ensure that it is providing the desired results.

In conclusion, staff engagement and professional development are critical strategies for companies that want to succeed in 2023. With more than 75% of staff coming to work not-engaged, it's clear that companies must prioritize these strategies in order to stay competitive. By fostering an engaged workforce and providing opportunities for professional development, companies can improve productivity, employee retention, customer satisfaction and foster innovation and creativity. It's time to start prioritizing employee engagement and professional development in your company's strategy to ensure a successful 2023.

Why These 6 Elements Are the Secret to Exceptional Portfolio Management Results, Part #2

Speak to almost anyone in the low to middle private equity space and they’ll tell you straight, “The toughest part of Portfolio Management is…People!”

Part #2 - The Need for Uncertainty or Variety

You'll remember the first human need being Certainty or Safety, well if we have too much of it we will get bored.

So, the second human need balances this out.

For some of us this can seem subtle to the untrained eye. A different choice from a menu, entering a conversation they usually wouldn't or taking a different route home. And for others it's right in your face with adventure sports, trying new hobbies regularly and generally putting themselves in different environments whenever they can.

There are also much more unresourceful ways to achieve the need for uncertainty or variety; drinking alcohol or taking drugs to alter your state, having an affair or getting into fights for the sake of it.

So, the question begs itself - ‘How do we utilise this information in our portfolio management for increased performance?’

Here is a starter list and one to get your creativity going for each of your portfolio companies:
> Change the time, day or location of a regular meeting
> Introduce a guest presenter into a meeting
> Send a message via pre-recorded video if you usually do it in written form
> Announce an internal sprint competition with no time for anyone to prepare for it

The idea is to inject a little bit of mystery and to break the routine you have worked so hard to build from the first human need. Remembering some people have this need of Variety higher up and will thrive, while others have it lower and may be OK with it for a short period but it will challenge them more - which is the point.

Why These 6 Elements Are the Secret to Exceptional Portfolio Management Results, Part #1

Speak to almost anyone in the private equity space and they’ll tell you straight, “The toughest part of Portfolio Management is…People!”

You see the potential for incredible growth, you put your years of experience and training to work feeling completely confident that if it is executed as planned, this will be yet another successful investment.

But then you have that little voice in the back of your head which reminds you of the extra factor…or otherwise known as the X-Factor. Of course we’re talking about the human element of business.

In this 6 Part Mini-Series we’ll get to the core of the 6 Elements which drives each and every human on the planet! Yes, we are all driven by the same 6 Elements, we just need to learn what they are and how to see them through the noise and chaos.

Part #1 - The Need for Certainty and Safety

Did you know the number one primal need for all humans is the need for safety, survival or also known as certainty.

When you think how we have evolved as the world around us has changed, the one thing remains constant and that is our resilience to survive.

Certainty can often be found from routine. When we do the same thing, we get familiar with it and the results it brings. Think about why you would watch the same movie more than once. You know how it all works out, so why waste your time watching it again and again and again? Simply put, it fills the bucket of ‘Certainty’.

On the other hand we can achieve Certainty in more painful ways, like eating excessive amounts of junk food. Even though logically we know this isn’t good for our health, it creates a pleasure sensation which creates the feeling of certainty.

So, the question begs itself - ‘How do we utilise this information in our portfolio management for increased performance?’

Here is a starter list and one to get your creativity going for each of your portfolio companies:

Routines - Meetings on the same day and time of the week

Communication - When we are unsure of something, have you ever noticed how quickly we can create a story of disaster? Communication is key to creating an environment of safety and certainty.

Regular Feedback - The saying ‘no news is good news’ isn’t always the case when it comes to how the staff of your portfolio company’s feel, especially when there is change. Making sure the leadership team gives regular feedback on their performance allows the staff to know how they are being perceived. And when there is room for improvement, the staff are offered a development plan which again shows them they are valued and have a future at the company.

Which one or more of the suggestions above will you add to your portfolio management plan? Or has another idea sparked which will achieve safety and certainty for the staff?

Is Overwhelm Just You Being Scared of Doing the Work?

I shared my lead generation plan with a colleague and it was interesting what their reactions were.

“Wow, that looks amazing. But I feel overwhelmed just thinking about it.”

I never mentioned how long this will take to implement or what deadline I gave myself.

And yet one of the first things (and probably the first thing if he was being honest) was to worry about how much much was involved.

Also, he never thought about what this lead generation strategy could be worth to me.

If it was going to bring in $1,000 I’d Sat it wasn’t worth it, right?

But what if I said it could be worth $100k…

Or what about $500k…

What about $10M…

Get the point. We are so wired for immediate gratification we don’t think about the real opportunity of what we’re creating.

How much effort would you put into a lead generation strategy that could be worth $1M or more in the next 12 months?

How to Charge 10X More for Doing the Same Thing

Imagine how good that would be. Overnight you 10X your price and deliver the exact same thing.

Sounds too good to be true...right?

I want you to take a minute and think about the last couple purchases you have made online (or offline) or what ads really catch your attention.

Got it?

Good.

Most likely the thing you purchased or the ads that catch your attention are things you are most interested in right now, as in this very minute.

Makes sense doesn't it.

And I would go further to say the reason you purchased the thing from that specific supplier or hit that ad was because there was something in the message which caught your eye, as if they were talking specifically to you and you only.

Now could have you found that thing cheaper somewhere else? Possibly, but you felt compelled to buy from them because you believed what they had was in some way more specific to your needs.

This is the power of niching.

When you can take your message from trying to serve everyone, to serving only a very specific and targeted audience you can tailor the message.

And this does a couple very important things:
(A) Attracts your ideal clients
(B) Detracts everyone else

The other huge benefit is you can charge a lot more for the same thing. Because your ideal client has more confidence you will be able to deliver what you say you will. Because all you do is serve this one very specific (niche) market. And therefore you must deeply understand what we go through and how to help.

People will always pay more when they have confidence in your ability to deliver on your promise.

To hear more about the power of niching and the 4 steps to picking a profitable niche, make sure you listen to tomorrow's episode on our Podcast - The Ultimate Business Profits Show.

Is It Time to Consume LESS Content?

Look, I love to learn!

Which is kind of weird because I wasn’t an academic at school…at all. In fact I only just got a grade in my final year at high school.

But when we find our passion, learning comes easily.

The danger ⚠️ here is we can get caught in the trap of ‘always needing to know more’ before we do the thing we are actually learning about.

I see this all the time and used to do it myself. Every now and then I check in with myself to make sure I’m not falling into bad habits.

The real lessons come from doing the thing, getting feedback from the results your getting and then finding answers to the questions which really need answering.

Learning is a life long journey, especially in Business.

So don’t allow yourself to get stuck in the belief ‘I need to know this one more thing’, just do it and be ok you’re probably going to suck at it. I can guarantee almost everyone does when they start.

✅ Imperfect action

✅ Learn what you need to know now

✅ Be OK with not getting it perfect straight up

✅ Remember it’s a marathon and a sprint
