Look along the top of the door in slide three. That black arm is a pneumatic closer, and it is the reason this door is never left hanging open.

This is the laundry door of a Greensborough home, which means it gets opened with a basket on one hip and nothing free to shut it with. Push it with an elbow, walk through, and it closes itself behind you and latches. No going back for it, no door swinging in the wind, no flies following you in.

The dog has its own flap in the lower panel, so the door staying shut does not mean the dog stays put.

Two doors at this home, both VisionGard in Black. One on a verandah in slide one, one downstairs at the laundry in slides two and three. VisionGard is the perforated aluminium panel, a clean dark sheet from the outside. Double cylinder lock, two keys and an inside snib standard, and the closer comes standard too.

The front door in slide one is open. Nobody propped it for the photo. That is just how this house sits on a warm afternoon now.

Walk it through. Front door open behind a locked Invisigard screen. Slider at the back, slide two, open behind locked Invisigard sliding screens. Between them the whole house, with air moving through it. That is a cross breeze, and it only happens with a screened opening at both ends. One screened door gives you fresh air in one room. Two, front and back, cool the lot.

Both are Invisigard in Monument, the dark charcoal that sits well on red brick. A hinged door at the front beside the fluted sidelight, sliding screens over the two panel slider at the back. 316 stainless mesh, double cylinder lock, two keys and an inside snib standard on the hinged door.

Quick test for your own place. Stand at the front door on the next warm afternoon and ask where the air would go if you opened it. If the answer is nowhere, that is the opening to think about next.

The fitter has packed up and driven off. Here is what to look at before you close the door behind him.

Run your eye around the frame first. The margin between the security door and the reveal should be even the whole way round, top and both sides, with no wedge where one side runs wide. Then look at the mesh against the light. It should sit flat and tight with no ripples, because loose mesh is what rattles a year later. Last, let go of the door from about halfway open. It should close itself and click into the lock without slamming.

This Montmorency front door is what that looks like when it is done properly. Invisigard hinged door in Woodland Grey, made to Dave's measurement of the opening, sitting square in the rendered reveal with the same tight margin on every side. The 316 stainless mesh is pulled flat, so the timber front door and its five glass strips still show through cleanly from the deck. Double cylinder lock, two keys and an inside snib come standard.

The frame reads as part of the entry rather than something bolted onto it. That is the whole point. Security you notice once, then stop noticing.

If you park in the garage, this is your front door. It just never gets treated like one.

Invisigard in Paperbark on the internal garage entry of a Whittlesea home. Shot from the garage side looking in, which is why it looks different to everything else we post.

Two reasons people do this one.

The first is the one nobody thinks about. The door between the garage and the house is usually just a standard internal door. If the roller door is ever up, and plenty of them sit up for hours, that internal door is all there is between the two.

The second is the reason it gets used every day. With a screen on it, that door can sit open while you are out in the garage. Air moves through, you can hear the house, and the garage dust and the flies stay on the garage side where they belong.

Old houses are rarely square. That is the whole reason these get measured on site.

VisionGard front door in Black on a brick home in Preston. Deep reveal, older opening, and almost certainly not a perfect rectangle any more after decades of the place settling.

A stock size door in an opening like that either does not fit or fits with packers and a gap somewhere along one edge. You notice the gap every time you walk past it, and so does the weather.

Custom made means the frame is built to what the opening actually measures today, not what it measured in 1960. It is the least exciting part of the job and it is the part that decides whether the door still shuts properly in ten years.

You already own this space. You just cannot use it.

Nearly every older home has one. A verandah that counts as outdoor living on the floor plan and in practice is somewhere the pot plants sit. Too open to sit in properly, too exposed to leave anything on, and not secure enough to have the main door open behind it.

This one is in Yarrambat. Alugrille privacy screens right across the verandah in Primrose, with a sliding panel for access. Behind the diamond grille sits a privacy mesh, so from the outside the panels read as solid. From inside you still get the light and the view out.

What that changes is what the space is actually for. The verandah becomes part of the house instead of part of the street. Chairs can stay out. The door can stay open. You can sit there without being on show to everyone going past.

The front door was done to match, same Alugrille, same Primrose, same privacy mesh. And the leadlight either side of it was left exactly where it was, because there is no good reason a security door should cover up the best part of an old entry.

Whole house in one visit. Front, alfresco, laundry and the side door into the garage.

Invisigard on the front where you want the mesh to disappear. Alugrille sliders on the alfresco and laundry, and a hinged Alugrille to the garage, where solid matters more than subtle. All of it Surfmist with black hardware.

Most people do this one door at a time. Front door now, back door in two summers, laundry when the flyscreen finally gives up. It works, it just costs more measuring, more install days and more chance of ending up with mismatched colours.

Doing the lot at once means one measure, one install, one colour, and then you genuinely never think about it again.

If your house came with a screen door already on it, have a proper look at what it actually is.

On most new builds it is a flyscreen. Aluminium frame, insect mesh, a little clip catch. It was never sold as security and it was never meant to be. It just looks close enough to a security door that people assume the job is done and never think about it again.

This one in Beveridge is the real thing. Invisigard in Surfmist, picked to sit with the render rather than fight it.

Fine stainless mesh, so you still get the light, the air and the view out to the street. A proper lockset, three hinges, and made to measure for the opening instead of a stock size packed out to fit.

If you are not sure which one you have got, there is an easy check. Grab the mesh and give it a push. A flyscreen gives. A security screen does not move.

The whole point of an Invisigard door is that you cannot tell it is there. The whole point of this one is that you can.

Alugrille in Monument on a side entry in Mernda. Solid extruded aluminium in the diamond pattern, flywire behind it, same lockset as the rest of the range.

On a front entry most people want the security to disappear. On a side door, obvious is fine. Anyone coming up the side of the house can tell from ten metres away that this one is going to be more trouble than it is worth, and that is a fair bit of the work done before anybody touches anything.

It is also the sensible way to spend. The openings on a house do different jobs, so there is no rule saying they all need the same door. Do the front properly, do the side and back solidly, and put the difference where it actually gets looked at.

Worth raising when you are getting quotes, because plenty of places will just price you the same door four times over.

Most people get the front door done and leave the back one.

Which is backwards, because the back door is the one you actually use. It is where the kids go in and out forty times a day, where the food goes out to the table, and where the door ends up sitting open for most of summer.

This one is in Mernda. Invisigard sliding screen in White, in the same opening as the glass slider, straight out onto the alfresco.

Worth knowing if you have a sliding door: you are not stuck with the builder's flyscreen slider. A proper security screen goes in the same opening and slides the same way. A lot of people assume sliders can only take flywire and never think to ask.

The mesh keeps the view out to the yard and the light coming in. Kids can be out the back with the door shut behind them and you can still see them from the kitchen.

Good time of year to have it measured. Fitted and forgotten before the first weekend you actually want the back door open.
