Some front doors face the street. Some sit back in their own little porch, and you only see them once you are standing right at them.

This Bundoora entry is the second kind. The door is tucked in behind two side walls and under a deep ceiling, so from the footpath you barely know it is there.

That is lovely when you are coming home. It also means anyone standing at your door is out of sight of the street while they are there. On an entry like this, the door has to do the job that neighbours walking past can't.

So this one got Alugard in Monument, with a narrow matching panel beside it. A single sheet of aluminium punched with small holes, dark charcoal against the brown render. Light and air come through, and from the porch it reads as one solid, finished entry.

Halloween is coming up, and your front door will probably get knocked on more that one night than the rest of the month put together.

Most of it is lovely. Kids in costumes, a parent hanging back at the gate. It is also a good night to start a habit worth keeping all year: answer the door without unlocking it.

Open the front door, leave the security door locked, and talk through it. You can see who is there, they can hear you fine, and you decide whether it opens. For a bucket of lollies it does. For someone you were not expecting, it doesn't have to.

Ask most people what colours a security door comes in and you get three answers. Black, white, and some sort of grey.

This one is Wallaby, a soft warm grey from the Colorbond range, on an Invisigard front door in Glenroy.

The frames are powder coated, so the choice is not three colours off a shelf. Just in the last few months we have put doors on in Wallaby, Monument, Surfmist, Paperbark, Woodland Grey, Primrose, white and black. The colour does not change the door, the mesh or the lock. It only changes how it looks on the house.

Most people never ask because they assume the answer is black or white. Then the door goes on, and it is the one thing on the front of the house nobody actually chose.

You might still pick black. Plenty of people do, and it looks sharp. The point is to pick it, rather than end up with it.

Not every security door goes on the house.

These two are on a Hurstbridge property, and neither of them is the front door. Slide one is an old timber shed with a concrete floor running back into it. Slide two is a clad building off the deck with shelving inside.

Most shed doors only have two settings. Wide open, which lets in the flies, the leaves and whatever wanders up from the bush. Or shut and padlocked, which means no air on the days you are actually out there working.

An Invisigard door in the opening gives you a third setting. Main door open, air moving, and the screen locked behind you when you walk back up to the house. The black frames sit quietly against the weathered timber and the grey cladding, so nothing looks added on.

It is worth thinking about what is in there, too. For a lot of properties out this way the mower, the tools and the bikes are worth more than most of what is in the lounge room, and they usually sit behind the flimsiest door on the place.

Not every security door is mesh.

Both of these Ringwood doors are Alugard in Black. Instead of woven stainless mesh, the panel is a single sheet of aluminium punched with thousands of small round holes. No weave at all.

You can see what that does in slide one. Where the sun hits the bottom of the panel, the holes show. Where the shadow falls across the top, the panel goes almost solid. From the street you see the shape of a door, not straight into the hallway, and from inside you still look out and the air still comes through.

So which one is right for you? A rough rule: if the view through the door is the point, Invisigard. If you want the door to look solid and give a bit more cover from the footpath, Alugard. Neither is the lesser door. They are two different answers to two different front doors.

These two are on an older brick home with stained timber frames, and the black sits well against both.

A pair of doors is really one door you use and one you don't.

Look at this Beveridge entry. VisionGard in Monument, two doors meeting in the middle, and only one handle. The left door does all the work. The right one stays shut most of the year and opens when the new couch is coming in or the Christmas tree is going out.

That quiet second door is the question to ask at quote time: how is it held shut?

The lock on the working door closes against the second door, so the second door has to be held firmly into the frame itself, top and bottom. If it isn't, the whole pair is only as strong as a door nobody ever checks. It is also the easiest thing to forget to ask about when you are busy choosing colours.

Clocks go forward tonight. Light until nearly eight, and for the next six months the front door spends a lot more time open.

So here is the habit worth starting now: use the snib, not the key.

This Doreen entry is Invisigard in Black, hinged on the left with the lock on the right. Like every door Dave fits, it comes with a double cylinder lock, two keys and an inside snib. The snib is the small catch on the inside of the lock. One flick and the door is locked from outside, no key needed. That is the one for when you are home with the front door open and the evening air coming through.

The key is for when you leave. And if you ever lock it with the key while people are still inside, keep that key on a hook by the door, not in a bag in another room. If anyone needs to get out in a hurry, they should not be hunting for it.

Small thing. It is also the difference between a door that gets locked every time and one that only gets locked when someone remembers where the key went.

There is a brass bell by the door. A weatherboard house that still has a bell by the door deserves better than a flat modern screen.

So this pair was made to suit it. Titan custom steel double doors in White, with cast corners, a turned spindle rail across the middle, and the whole thing sized to the house's own timber double doors behind. The textured glass in the top of those doors still shows through the mesh, and the entry looks like it has always been this way.

That is the thing with period homes. The wrong security door is the first thing you notice, every time you walk up the path. The right one you stop seeing in a week.

Give it five summers. That is the honest test of any door on the front of a house.

Five summers of sun on the frame, five of the door swinging a dozen times a day, five of grit blowing across a new estate. A cheap door fades, the mesh loosens or tears, the closer gives up and the whole thing starts to rattle in the wind. It looked fine on day one. Most things do.

By January that sun is heat. It sits on the door for hours, the entry warms up, and the room behind it follows. The usual fix is to keep the door shut and the blinds down, which is a strange way to live in your own hallway.

VisionGard is the door for an entry that cops the afternoon. The panel is perforated aluminium, thousands of small holes in a solid sheet.
