Hoverflies are an Australian native insect often referred to as a “good guy” in the garden – but why?

It turns out that not only are they excellent pollinators of our crops and other plants their juvenile stage eats aphids and other garden pests and lots of them!

Hoverflies, Eristalis sp., are commonly encountered during the warmer months. They can be seen hovering in one spot but can suddenly move in any direction before hovering again. They mimic and look similar to some wasps but are completely harmless. There are many different species and found all over Australia.

They are truly an insect to be appreciated and celebrated in the garden.

We see a lot of hoverflies enjoying our plants as they grow at our Mornington Peninsula site. Here they are on a native wax flower, Chamelaucium uncinatum 'Pinnacle Pink, one of two Chamelauciums we are currently shipping to nurseries including Bunnings.

Australian native wax flowers are beautiful and bloom prolifically. We stock a couple that were bred by the team at Kings Park in Perth. Check out
