What if light could protect your seafood?

A new surface hygiene innovation technology for seafood processors - a multi-wavelength high-intensity antimicrobial blue light.

This automated technology can operate continuously and is chemical-free, as it fights harmful bacteria (e.g., Listeria and biofilms), reduces cross-contamination, and improves overall hygiene standards.

🔬 Why it matters:

Seafood is highly vulnerable to contamination and spoilage

Traditional cleaning methods don’t always eliminate risks like Listeria

Advanced light technologies can significantly reduce bacteria and extend shelf life

Today, we celebrate the importance of food safety! Globally, foodborne diseases cause at least 200 illnesses that are generally preventable.

This year's theme, From burden to solutions - safe food everywhere, highlights how data on illness, its burden and lost lives can guide action towards focused and cost-effective solutions.

Food safety goes far beyond compliance — it is a shared responsibility that protects the health, livelihoods, education, economies and trust of everyone who consumes food.

Food business can reduce this burden by:

✅ Reducing cross-contamination risks

✅ Improving personal hygiene and cleaning practices

✅ Completing up-to-date food safety training

✅ Having HACCP-based food safety plans

✅ Trending key food safety issues, finding the root cause and implementing sustainable solutions to solve the issues.

✅ Ensuring annual reviews of your food safety plans to ensure they are still up-to-date and relevant to your current practices.

Thank you to all the individuals and teams who champion food safety every day. Your work truly makes a difference. 👏

Could the plastic packaging on our seafood be making dangerous bacteria like Salmonella more powerful❓ A new study reveals nanoplastics can increase virulence, biofilm formation, and even drug resistance in these pathogens. This raises concerns for the seafood industry, from processing to consumer safety.

Here’s how nanoplastics can impact the seafood industry:

⭕️Makes bacteria stronger: Can boost Salmonella's virulence.

⭕️Harder to clean: They promote biofilm formation (sticky bacterial layers).

⭕️Limits treatment: They can increase drug resistance in bacteria.

⭕️Product Self-life: Raises questions around the potential reduction of product shelf-life.

⭕️Affects food safety: Could increase Salmonella risks throughout processing and for end consumers.

⭕️Challenges trust: Might erode consumer confidence in seafood safety and your business reputation.

Is it time to rethink our use of plastic even further❓

“An hour of planning can save hours of doing.” – Dale Carnegie

No matter if you're out on a fishing vessel, working in a manufacturing plant, or managing a warehouse, one thing is certain—the post-harvest seafood industry moves fast.

Finding those down moments to plan effectively can be the difference between a smooth operation and a costly bottleneck. The right plan ensures things get done once and done right.

Here’s how to make that hour of planning count:

✅ Map Your Workflow from End to End – Where are your key handover points? Are there unnecessary delays between steps?

✅ Identify Your Breakpoints – Where do things consistently slow down or go wrong? Fixing recurring issues at the source saves time in the long run.

✅ Standardise Processes – Are your teams following the same methods? Clear SOPs reduce errors and training time.

✅ Account for Contingencies – Equipment failures, supply chain hiccups, workforce shortages—what’s your backup plan?

✅ Use Data to Drive Decisions – Track performance metrics to spot inefficiencies and adjust proactively.

In an industry where fresh product and quick turnaround times are everything, the best operators aren’t working harder—they’re just consistent!

Where can you find an hour to refine your workflow this week?

🚨 Australian Failing Imported Foods Report – March Update 🚨

The latest Failing Foods Report from DAFF is out, listing imported foods that have failed testing due to non-permitted additives, prohibited ingredients, or contamination risks.

The listed failing seafood results included:

▪️ Frozen raw prawns from Vietnam for Nitrofurans

▪️ Soft shell crab from Indonesia for Nitrofurans

If you're importing seafood, stay informed - failing foods can lead to order holds and 100% inspections until compliance is restored, which could have a significant impact on your business. Also, do you handle similar domestic products that could have these potential risks? If so, now is a good time to review your policies, procedures, and HACCP before this becomes an issue for you.

In today's world of running a seafood business, leveraging technology effectively is key to staying ahead in the game. While humans play a crucial role, technology can significantly enhance productivity and profitability. On the other hand, if it's not working correctly or to the optimal level, it can cause a lot of headaches (and maybe some choice words yelling at it 😤 - we have all been there!)

Take a moment to evaluate: Are you utilising your tech resources to their potential? Have you completed the training to be able to use it effectively? Start by identifying any workflow gaps that might be hindering efficiency. See where your current technology can help, as chances are it can do more than you think it can.

If you need a hand to evaluate your workflow and efficiency gaps, reach out for a consultation on how to optimise your tech strategy.
