🚨 Australian Failing Imported Foods Report – June Update 🚨

The latest Failing Foods Report from DAFF is out, listing imported foods that have failed testing due to non-permitted additives, prohibited ingredients, or contamination risks.

The listed failing seafood results included:

💠Frozen raw soft shell crab - from Thailand for Nitrofurans

💠Frozen cooked scampi shrimp from Vietnam for Nitrofurans

💠Frozen cooked prawn cutlet from Vietnam for Fluoroquinolones

If you're importing seafood, stay informed - failing foods can lead to order holds and 100% inspections until compliance is restored, which could have a significant impact on your business. Also, do you handle similar domestic products that could have these potential risks? If so, now is a good time to review your policies, procedures, and HACCP before this becomes an issue for you.

You don't need to fix everything yourself.

Great leaders don't have all the answers, and they don't need to.

Whether you're navigating audits, adapting to new regulations, or improving workplace culture, the best outcomes come from working together, asking questions, and drawing on your team's knowledge.

Asking for support isn't a weakness; it's smart leadership. By empowering others and encouraging collaboration, you build stronger teams, better solutions, and a more resilient organisation.

Leadership isn't about doing it all. It's about bringing out the best in others.

As the food industry continues to evolve, staying ahead of changing regulations is essential. Audits are no longer just about compliance; they're an opportunity to strengthen your systems, improve performance, and build a culture of food safety.

Want to be future-ready? Here are a few practical tips:

✅ Stay informed about changes to food safety regulations and industry standards.
✅ Conduct regular internal audits to identify gaps before external assessments.
✅ Invest in ongoing training so your team understands their role in maintaining compliance.
✅ Keep your policies, procedures and records up to date.
✅ Treat audit findings as opportunities to improve, not just issues to fix.

Businesses that embrace continuous improvement are better prepared for change, reduce risk, and build greater confidence with customers and regulators alike.

Stay informed. Stay compliant. Stay future-ready. 🚀

To everyone who supported us after the devastating crazy December 2023 Cyclone Jasper weather, I wanted to share a small update on what has grown from that difficult experience. Your support helped my family begin rebuilding our lives and our farm. At the time, we were primarily a Barramundi farm, but when the waters rose, the Barramundi swam away while most of the Redclaw crayfish stayed behind. That experience forced us to rethink the future of the farm and focus on the species that had survived.

Years later, we are still in recovery mode and doing everything we can to rebuild, adapt and keep the farm going. Rather than allowing that adversity to define me, I used it—together with the mistakes, challenges, practical lessons and wisdom gained over many years—to write a book and audiobook that may help other farmers make better-informed decisions.

This book brings together the wisdom I have gained through years of hands-on experience, setbacks, problem-solving and learning what works—and what does not.

It is not a technical farming manual written for established Redclaw farmers. It is for everyday people who may be wondering whether Redclaw could provide a realistic sideline income from a backyard, an aquaponics system, shed, fish tank, dam or small property. The book helps readers honestly evaluate the opportunity—including their land, water, local regulations, market, lifestyle and financial goals—before spending heavily or making costly mistakes.

Although the book draws mostly on my experiences in Australia, it has been written for a global audience interested in sustainable food production, small-scale enterprise and creating an additional income stream. If you have ever contemplated small-scale farming as a possible sideline business, the ebook or audiobook will help you explore the idea and decide whether the opportunity is genuinely right for you.

Purchasing a copy will also support the next chapter of our farm’s recovery and help us turn a very difficult season into something practical that may benefit others around the world.

You can purchase the ebook or audiobook here for just $20

Oysters & Clams to the Rescue: How Recycled Shells Are Helping Restore the Gulf of Mexico 🦪

From 2007 to 2024, recycled oyster and clam shells from restaurants and seafood processors were used to help restore damaged oyster reefs along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Rather than going to landfill, the shells were ‘dumped’ in coastal waters, where they provided reefs. Over time, these reefs supported new marine life, improved water quality through natural filtration, and created healthier habitats for fish, turtles and other coastal species.

It’s a powerful reminder that ecosystem restoration does not always require inventing something new. Sometimes, it means giving nature the right conditions to recover and do what it does best.
