In light of the recent national recall of coloured sand products, Microanalysis Australia has been supporting the community with timely, accurate asbestos testing and clear communication during a period of understandable concern.
Our team continues to process a high volume of submissions from schools, childcare centres, retailers and families. To date, we have not detected asbestos in any of the samples we have analysed, and testing remains ongoing.
This news article by the ABC below provides an overview of the current situation, the science behind asbestos detection, and the precautions recommended by health authorities:

⚠️Kinetic / Magic Sand / Coloured Sand – Asbestos Testing Advisory⚠️
With recent reports raising concerns about asbestos contamination in imported craft products, first crayons, and now kinetic or “magic” sand, it’s more important than ever for consumers, educators and suppliers to ensure product safety.
At Microanalysis Australia, we provide rapid, accurate analysis of suspect materials using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) combined with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). This method allows us to definitively identify the presence of asbestos minerals at extremely low concentrations.
Importantly, SEM also enables the detection of “countable” cleavage fragments, particles that may technically meet dimensional criteria under Australian optical microscopy standards, yet are non-asbestiform and therefore not considered true asbestiform asbestos. Distinguishing between these is critical for accurate risk assessment and compliance.

If you or your organisation requires certainty, Microanalysis Australia can assist with comprehensive materials testing, clear reporting, and expert interpretation.

⚠️ Safety ⚠️
If you have this sand in your home, please stop using it immediately and make sure it’s kept well out of reach of children.
The ACCC has advised that it should not be disposed of in general waste.
