Eltham & District Winemakers' Guild

Eltham & District Winemakers' Guild The Guild, a non-for-profit association, interested in all aspects of wine appreciation & winemaking.

The Guild is a non-for-profit association that is interested in all aspects of amateur wine making, wine education and wine appreciation. Guild activities are focused on all aspects of winemaking, from growing grapes through learning how to judge wines. Many of our activities concentrate on non-grape or "country wines". Ever tried plum wine, peapod wine, parsley wine, mead and perhaps even grass c

lipping wine ? Or perhaps the speciality of one of our members - asparagus wine ? Yum (perhaps ?) ...

The Guild was formed in 1969 and has been operating ever since, albeit with somewhat fluctuating membership numbers over the years. The old timers often comment (in crotchety old voices) "Remember the days in 1975 when the whole Wine Show was held on a rickety trestle table out the back". Fortunately, today membership is thriving with current numbers at over 50 members. But there's always room for more, so feel free to come along to one of our monthly meetings (last Friday of each month, 8 pm, Eltham Living & Learning Centre) or to our annual Wine Show to meet our members and enjoy sharing the experiences of amateur winemaking.

🐝 INTRODUCTION TO MEADMAKING COURSE 🍺

Want to learn how to make mead? JOIN US!

The Guild is running an Introduction to Meadmaking course - and we start in a few weeks.
Over the weeks you'll make a small batch (about 6 bottles) of Joe's Ancient Orange Mead - using techniques and utensils you can use to make any meads - and apply to winemaking.

We'll be there to help and guide you every step of the way.

Let your friends know - you can do it together ...

πŸ”΄ 2025 ELTHAM WINE SHOW πŸ”΄

What a weekend! I think I can safely say that we pulled off a jolly good Eltham Wine Show.

Judging Day went smoothly. The judges were impressed with the quality of the wines - several said how much they love supporting and encouraging amateur winemaking - and that they love coming to our show.

Yesterday's Public Open Day was filled with winemakers catching up, sharing their wines, chatting about winemaking, the positives and negatives of their results and what they might do differently next vintage. But what struck me the most was the cameraderie - a community that shares a love of wine and wine making.

A special congratulations to Diego (Danny) Cappellani on the presentation of his Life Membership in recognition of his dedication to the Guild over many years - sharing his knowledge, teaching winemaking, offering help, sourcing and gathering grapes, working on the Committee, organising functions, entertaining us at International Nights ... the list could go on.

Congratulations to our Trophy winners:
β–ͺ️Best Country Winemaker Trophy - David Hart
β–ͺ️ Best Grape Winemaker Troohy - Richmoore Wines
β–ͺ️Best Previous Shiraz Trophy - Phil Kemm, Anthony Kemm & Robin Hick for their 2013 Shiraz
β–ͺ️ Mead Cup - Amrita Park Meadery
β–ͺ️Graham Scott Winemaker of the Year (WOTY) - the Harridge Family
β–ͺ️Jo Ilian - Fantin O'Callaghan for their 2024 Sauvignon Blanc

A HUGE thank you to the Committee - I cannot convey just how hard they have been working - over the last year - to enable the Wine Show.

Another big thank you goes to Luca Barbon and his team of wine industry professionals who judge our wines. This was Luca's first Wine Show as our Chief Judge, and it was a pleasure to plan and work with him. All our judges donate their time and expertise to support amateur winemaking - thank you!

A very grateful thank you to the Guild Members who volunteered their time and expertise across the weekend. Without them there would not be a Wine Show.

And thank you also to the winemaker entrants and their support crews for entering wines and coming along to the Public Open Day. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The judging results are up on the website, and we'll put together the full Results Book over this week. I ask that you give us a few days grace - to say that we are a tad worn out and need a few days to recover would be an understatement.

Yours in Winemaking - Angela Harridge - President

April Guild Night was a challenging one for our palates and wine characteristics knowledge.

Being ANZAC Day we decided to have a relaxed night of 'Guess Which Wine This Is'. We blind tasted 11 bottles of wine and had to work out 'which was which'. It certainly tested our palates and knowledge of the different varieties (except for the Cherry wine - that was a bit of a give-away! πŸ˜‰

NONE of us got all of them correct (no surprise there) - and there was some serious discussion around each set of tastings - accompanied by a great deal of eye-rolling and laughter.

Next Month = learn about Kombucha (one of our Wine Show classes) - benefits and how to make it.
