Small Company Big Business

Small Company Big Business "Getting small business ready to do business with big business." Complexity. Big companies have a raft of requirements that small businesses must meet. Cost.

"We believe that small business is the engine room of the economy, and the lifeblood of our communities." At some point on their business journey, small business owners will want to take on contracts with a larger organisation. Mining for Business specialises in giving small businesses that extra edge they need to be successful, profitable and reliable suppliers to these large organisations - whet

her they be corporates, Government, or even Not For Profits. We took our own small company on this journey, and grew our business into an award-winning consultancy, working with most of the major mining and oil and gas companies operating in Australia, including BHP, RioTinto, and GlencoreXstrata. Over the years of talking with other small business owners, we have found that there are three common problems that they face when trying to deal with large organisations. They are complex, and constantly change. Getting all these requirements in place can take a lot of time and money - and then they have to keep them up to date. Getting Visible. Small businesses really struggle with getting a foot in the door, and getting themselves on the radar of the resource companies. Often, a small initial contract will lead to more work, but getting that initial introduction is difficult

Big businesses focus on systems, strategy, customers, numbers, and long-term growth. Small businesses can use the same principles—without losing the personal touch that makes them unique.

You don’t have to be big to think strategically. You just need to understand what drives sustainable growth.

Big businesses aren’t necessarily successful because they’re bigger. They succeed because they understand their customers, their numbers, their risks, and what needs to happen next.

Small businesses can compete too—when they have the right knowledge, systems, and mindset to make better decisions.

Because growth isn’t just about getting bigger. It’s about getting smarter.

Understanding how larger organisations think can change the way you approach them.

They are a bigger beast — with more layers, processes and people involved. Winning them over takes time, patience and a clear understanding of how they operate.

This is exactly why I wrote the book: to help small businesses better understand the world of big business and navigate it with greater confidence.

I’m incredibly grateful for feedback like this. It’s a wonderful reminder of why this work matters.

A purpose statement means very little if it doesn’t influence everyday decisions. The real opportunity is to make purpose part of how the business operates, communicates and builds relationships.

What if a big company could write you a letter?

It might say:

“We value your agility. We admire your innovation. But we need to know you can manage risk, meet compliance requirements, deliver consistently and support our scale.”

That changes the conversation, doesn’t it?

The GAP Effect isn’t simply about big companies making things difficult for small businesses. It is often about two businesses looking at the same relationship from completely different perspectives.

SMEs need to understand what sits behind corporate requirements.

Corporates need to understand the value SMEs bring.

The business landscape keeps changing, but this lesson remains important today: successful partnerships start with understanding—not assumptions.

Big companies aren’t small businesses. And that matters.

For an SME trying to win a corporate contract, it can be frustrating when a large organisation asks for endless documentation, compliance checks, financial information and proof of capability.

But what looks like unnecessary bureaucracy from your side often looks like risk management from theirs.

Large companies are protecting their reputation, customers, employees and stakeholders.

The lesson? Don’t expect corporates to think like you. Learn how they think.

Understanding their priorities can help you present your business in a way that makes sense to them—and builds confidence.

The message still holds strong in 2026: understanding the other side can be the difference between being overlooked and being trusted.

Sometimes, you just have to keep saying it.

I joked recently that perhaps if you go on and on and on about sustainability and responsibility, you eventually wear someone down! 😂

But there’s actually something in that.

When you believe something matters, you have to keep talking about it. Keep showing up. Keep explaining why it matters. And, most importantly, keep finding practical ways to make it relevant to the people you’re trying to help.

For small businesses, sustainability isn’t about ticking boxes or following the latest trend. It’s about building a business that is responsible, resilient and ready for the future.

Sometimes persistence really does pay off. 🥇

If the answer is “I thought they were handling it,” your business may have a governance problem.

Governance isn’t about filling your business with rules, meetings and paperwork. It’s about creating clarity.

Who makes the decisions?
Who has authority?
Who is accountable?
And are your people clear about what is expected of them?

For SMEs, even a few simple processes can prevent misunderstandings, improve decision-making and strengthen relationships with staff, customers and partners.

You don’t need a complicated governance framework. You need one that works for your business.
