Ensham is an Underground coal mine located approximately 35km east of Emerald.

Ensham Mine is an existing underground bord and pillar coal mine located approximately 35 km east of Emerald and 50km north-west of Blackwater. Underground operations commenced in 2011, with progressive rehabilitation continuing over the mine’s life. Ensham proudly hosts Nogoa Pastoral livestock in and around mining and rehabilitation areas as a joint business. Open-cut rehabilitation works commenced in 2022 and have recently received industry accolades. We are very proud of the ongoing work and the achievements our team has accomplished. Ensham has been a significant contributor to the Emerald community since 1993 and, for the past 25 years, has supported regional employment and local businesses. Ensham is committed to working with our local communities to create sustainable outcomes. The continued employment of the existing workforce at the Ensham Mine is of strategic economic and social significance to the Emerald locality and wider Central Highlands region. Ensham Mine is operated by Ensham Resources Pty Ltd (Ensham), with joint shareholders comprising of Sungela Pty Ltd (85%) and Bowen Investment (Australia) Pty Ltd (15%). Sungela acquired their stake in Ensham mine in late 2023 with the support of their shareholders.

Snags for a good cause! 🌭🤝

Round 2 of our MATES in Mining series is officially on the books at Thungela’s Ensham Mine.

A huge thank you to all our employees and contractors who stepped up to grab a $5 snag (all proceeds donated to Mates in Mining). We were also proud to have General Manager, Matthew Lumb, joined by visiting South African GMs Edrich and Matome, showcasing firsthand how mateship brings crews together across the globe.

A snag might seem simple, but every bite sparks vital conversations, supports peer connections, and raises funds for mental health and su***de prevention.

Our Thungela’s Ensham Mine participants in the 2026 QRC & WIMARQ Mentoring Program recently gathered in Brisbane for the halfway check-in day.

We were proud to welcome Jen Williams, our new Head of Finance and Commercial, to Thungela’s Ensham Mine for her first official site visit.

Jen toured our underground operations firsthand and connected with the site team across multiple areas. She also joined Dan Reynolds' all-staff update, where she was formally introduced to discuss the pivotal role she will play in supporting Thungela Australia’s ongoing growth and operational priorities.

Supporting our mates across every swing! 🤝💛

As part of our commitment to mental health education and early intervention, 17 Thungela’s Ensham Mine workers have successfully completed nationally recognised Mental Health Response training through Rise Foundation Australia.

Delivered across two dedicated sessions to cover both swings, this course equips our site team with practical tools, real-life coping strategies, and support pathways that directly partner with our Mates in Mining program.

Education creates change, giving our crew the 2-year accredited skills to spot the signs, offer support, and look out for one another every day. 👷‍♂️✨
