QYSEA Fifish ROVs - Underwater Drones Australia

An enthusiastic group of Transport for NSW team members descended on Coffs Harbour for an exciting two days of ROV, and extra gear training with Chad from Underwater Australasia, a certified QYSEA · FIFISH ROV trainer.

The group was from both the Marine and Bridge Inspection teams. All gathered to learn and understand how, when, why and what to use for their underwater applications, which vary significantly from mission to mission. The training was facilitated in Transport for NSW’s state-of-the-art facility in the Coffs Harbour Marina, where both theory and practical sessions were conducted. Further, the team was able to practice deploying equipment in the controlled environment of the marina and later off a vessel in open water.

The crew were super excited to unbox their new W6 NAVI ROV with an integrated grabber, 12,000-lumen LEDs and dual forward-facing cameras with a depth rating of 350m

On top of this, a variety of payloads we explored including Qysea’s new Tri-DVL, the Qysea U-INS system(Underwater Inertial Navigation System) complete with GNSS locator beacon. Waterlinked’s U-QPS system with full Qysea integration as well as BluePrint Subsea’s M750 Sonar, again integrated into the Qysea app for ease of use and other little bits and pieces from Qysea. These tools will allow Transport for NSW to send the ROV to a pre-designated set of coordinates and depth without touching the controller. The Sonar will give them the ability and confidence to undertake ROV missions in limited to zero visibility situations, while the Q-DVLs provide the security of collision avoidance - protecting the ROV and their investment.

The Marine team have many applications earmarked for the ROV and more will unfold, and the versatility of the unit becomes clearer with more experience. Use cases include identifying sunken vessels, search and rescue of lost items, surveying areas of interest and potentially running bathymetric surveys of water bodies.

While a ton of information was covered, the teams have a wonderfully capable ROV and ROV accessories to complete missions in less time, for less money, while keeping their people safer.

🌊 What an incredible few weeks bringing the underwater world to Queensland Museums! We had a blast at the World Science Festival Queensland 2026, presented by Queensland Museum, showcasing our QYSEA underwater drones across Toowoomba, Ipswich and Chinchilla.

From wide-eyed kids to enthusiastic teachers, it was fantastic to see so much curiosity about ROV technology — and even better watching people get hands-on and pilot the drones themselves!

As one educator put it: "Students and teachers were inspired by the activities on offer and your passion for STEM was greatly appreciated." 100% of respondents rated their WSFQ 2026 experience as "Exceeded my Expectations" — and we couldn't agree more about the experience ourselves.

Thank you to Queensland Museum and everyone we met along the way for making STEM come alive in regional Queensland.

On 14 July 2026, Underwater Australasia delivered an advanced QYSEA E-Master ROV Operator Training Course for participants from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) at the outstanding SIMS facilities in Chowder Bay, NSW.

The training combined comprehensive classroom instruction with practical field operations, equipping participants with the knowledge and confidence to safely deploy and operate professional underwater remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) for marine science, environmental monitoring and underwater inspection applications.
