This week is National Asbestos Awareness Week.

Did you know? 🔎

Despite being banned in 2003, thousands of buildings and machinery parts still contain asbestos. The risk of exposure to asbestos increases as the materials start to age.

Asbestos-containing materials that are damaged, disturbed or deteriorating can release dangerous fibres into the air, putting people at risk of breathing in these fibres, which can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Over the last 5 years, there have been 513 accepted workers’ compensation claims where the injury or disease was related to asbestos.

Knowing where asbestos is located in your workplace is critical. Our Asbestos Registers Guide provides practical information for recording the location, type, condition, and date of identification of all asbestos-containing materials.

Todays topic in our National Work Safe Month series focuses on heat stress in mining.

Heat stress can lead to an increase in a worker's core body temperature. Factors contributing to heat stress include the worker's clothing, physical activity, and environmental conditions like air temperature, radiant heat, humidity, and air movement. The body’s reaction to heat stress is known as heat strain.

The next topic in our National Work Safe Month series focuses on Health Management Plans.

A Health Management Plan (HMP) identifies potential health hazards for all workers at mining operations and outlines monitoring and assessment strategies to protect their well-being. Through regular inspections, audits, and health monitoring, mine operators ensure that exposure levels remain safe and effective risk management practices are in place.

Access and download the information sheets directly from the CME website.
