Spent a bit of time revamping our Cow Pat Pit over the last few days...
This forms a part of our efforts to improve soil biology. Fresh cow manure is matured in the ground in conjunction with the biodynamic preparations over the winter months. In spring when the vines begin to wake up, we will spray onto the soil throughout the vineyard to kick start the growing season.
Start by digging a hole 😁
A nice snapshot into our soil profile... Our own mini galets roules, spread over clay and Bluestone sub layers depending on where you are in.the block.
This soil profile is key to The unique quality of our wines, resulting in vibrant and complex fruit profiles. Low organic content though makes this type of work even more important!
The box is a simple arrangement, and we used a traditional Japanese technique yakisugi to preserve it (i.e. burn the heck out of it!).
Two layers deep for the quantities we need. It is important to keep the bottom connected to the soil to allow the micro and macro organisms to access. Worms and the funghi and bacteria present in the surrounds will make their way in over time.
Site supervisor keeping watch.
Finally we fill with fresh cow manure from lactating cows (living on the Fleurieu is handy for access to dairies).
Finally sprinkle with dried equisetum and let rest for a few months! When ready, we'll mix with fresh water and spray out on the soil amongst the vines.
