Contour Golf Design Group, Golf Course Architects Ben Davey, Director at Contour Design Group, started his career at Melbourne based Cashmore Golf Design in 1996. In 2009, he founded Davey Shearer Golf Design.

Contour Golf Design Group is an established golf course design company, providing golf course architecture, masterplanning and landscape design services across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. The company forged from strength to strength with China as its main target market. Bob Shearer, former Australian Open winner and US PGA tour player, was a significant factor in raising the profile of

the company in a country that was just learning about golf. Ben’s golf course design skills were finely tuned in response to the rigorous demands of China’s diverse topography and cultural requirements. Ben is a full member of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects (SAGCA)
Contour Design Group aims to provide clients in Australia and Internationally with high quality design solutions, customised specifically for each project. The vision focuses on a commitment to environmental responsibility, a passion for golf that is enjoyable to play, and to creating golf courses that are primarily designed for the ‘educated everyday golfer’ rather than the scratch marker.

I was at Tasmania golf club yesterday to see the new combined 4th and 9th tees, with all the paths between them gone. So much better! 2nd photo is new bunkering on the short par 4 4th (the old 15th). 3rd photo is the tee shot on 4 with the massive pine and blackwoods on the left removed. 4th and 5th photos are the new bunkering on 17, last photo is the par 3 2nd. Beautiful sunny day and there’s lots happening at TGC. Much more to come soon too.

I was back at Yowani last week. Grow in continues after a long hot and dry summer. Recent rain has nearly filled the lakes again. Pictured are the tee shot on the 120m par 3 12th, closer view of 12 green, approach shot to the bunkerless 13th, 7th and 13th greens with a pond between them, and the final approach to the par 5 11th. Full course opening some time in April.

I was back at Yowani before Christmas and sent up my drone to check out the grow-in. First photo (left to right) greens 11, 12 and 6. Second, the very short par 3 12th played out to the peninsula green. Then 7 left and 13 right, both long par 4’s. Then the new short par 4 18th in front of the new clubhouse still under construction, 10th hole on the left. The full 18 holes should be open around March.

The final stages at Yowani and the last few greens are now seeded. In order photos are;
1. Approach shot into 6.
2. Tee shot on the very long par 4 13th.
3. 12th green from front left, a short par 3.
4. View across the lake from 11 green to 12 green.
5. Approach into the par 5 11th from about 200 out.
6. The creek in front of the 17th, finished now with running water.
7. Approach shot (from about 60 out) on the 290m par 4 18th (water level is down) with clubhouse build continuing.
Just the practice putter to finish and then a whole lot of landscape work over the next few years. It’s been a great 2 years working on this and I can’t wait to see it open.

Back in Canberra and the new 120 metre par 3 12th at Yowani is ready for seeding. Three or four pins on the lower level next to the water plus a couple more on the plateau behind the left bunkers. The water level will come up to the top of the rock too.

The 18th green at Yowani is completed, the practice green to its rear is rough shaped, but needs to tie in to the clubhouse levels, so we haven’t finished it yet. I think it’s going to be an exciting short par 4 (about 290m), on full view from the double storey clubhouse!

Last week I was at Dunsborough Lakes, Pinjarra and Kwinana - all south of Perth in Western Australia. There’s lots happening in WA at the moment. At Kwinana we’re working on new (and completed) tees and bunker work. Pinjarra and Dunsborough it’s future works and master planning. I had to do a side trip to the amazing coastline near Margaret River too.

Here’s a few photos from Yowani CC in Canberra. Holes still growing in and a few months away still. The first is the 290 metre 18th - about 270 to fly it to the green. Second is the approach to 18 with the new clubhouse site and practice green behind. Third is the 17th green with the yet to be landscaped creek in front of. Fourth is the 14th green, a par 3. Last one is the approach to the 8th, also a short par 4. In the case of 8 and 14, we have only built half of the holes as the tees for both are in Stage 2 works zone, which is still in play… it’s complicated! We are currently building the new 3rd, 4th and 5th.
