The shortest day of the year might sound like the quietest point in the season, but in agriculture, it can be one of the most anticipated. 🌙
Here in Australia, the winter solstice falls on Sunday 21 June 2026, marking the day with the least daylight and from here, the days slowly start getting longer again.
For us, that shift matters. 🫶
Day length, soil temperature, weather patterns and seasonal timing all play a role in deciding what can be planted, when it can be planted, and how a crop will grow.
For crops like onions, changing day length is especially important, helping signal when the plant moves from leafy growth into bulb development. For carrots, the season still matters deeply, with planting windows carefully planned around soil conditions, temperature and the months ahead.
At Harvest Moon, this time of year is a bit of a turning point. It signals the beginning of important planting opportunities for certain crops and it is something our teams look forward to with good reason. 😍
Because agriculture is not just about what is happening today.
It is about reading the season, planning ahead, and knowing that even on the shortest day, the next crop is already on its way. 😋
